Nagqu City Map: Administrative Center, Districts and Counties

Use this Nagqu city map to find Seni District, the 1 district + 10 counties on the Changtang, and why the Qinghai–Tibet Railway is the real gateway.

A Nagqu city location map puts the administrative center in Seni District, north of Lhasa. Your ticket may say Nagqu while a Mandarin map says Seni. Both can be right, and still leave you thinking the whole Changtang prefecture is one town. One northern overnight is useful; treating every county outline as that same night is not.

This page keeps official names clear for hotels, railway stops, and a normal Tibet holiday. Region context: Nagqu Map and Where Is Nagqu Map. Sights: Nagqu Tourist Map.

Key Map Facts Before You Read a Nagqu City Map

What travelers ask Official fact What it means on your trip
Where is the administrative center? City government in Seni District (市政府驻浙江西路 3 号); the district government sits at 26 Wenhua Middle Road (文化中路 26 号) Your usual overnight base when people say “Nagqu”
How big is “Nagqu City”? One prefecture-level city with 1 district + 10 counties (no county-level city) Think “northern region,” not one walkable city
District Seni District only Hotels, meals, and station pickup cluster here
Counties (10) Lhari, Biru, Nyainrong, Amdo, Xainza, Sog, Bangoin, Baqên, Nyima, Shuanghu Only some appear on classic international routes (see counties table)
Main rail gateway Nagqu Railway Station on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway; Amdo Station also serves Amdo County Station ≠ city hall, but it is how many travelers arrive
Main roads G109 (older corridor); G6 Nala Expressway G6: Lhasa–Nagqu about 3 hours; G109: about 6 hours (planning estimates)
Commercial airport? Nagqu Daren Airport is planned / not in passenger service Do not book as if you can fly into Nagqu today
Town altitude Seni / Nagqu Town area about 4,500 m ASL (often cited ~4,500–4,530 m) Higher than Lhasa; plan rest seriously
Who publishes the codes? TAR civil-affairs division codes (Nagqu 540600), 2026 H1 announcement Confirm again before you travel; names on paper can change

“Nagqu” on a booking site and “Seni” on a Mandarin government map can feel like two places. One name is the formal Chinese unit; the other is where your hotel night lands. The next sections walk through that gap with northern plateau and railway logic, not a southern valley copy.

Sources & update: able: TAR civil-affairs administrative codes (2026 H1) and public seat listings (checked Oct 2026, Asia/Shanghai). Drive times are planning estimates, not guarantees.

Nagqu City vs Seni: Why One Name Covers a Huge Northern Region

On Chinese government maps, Nagqu is a prefecture-level city (地级市). That title covers a vast slice of the northern Tibetan Plateau (the Changtang) with thin air, long distances, and sparse towns. It is not a pocket downtown you can walk end to end in an afternoon.

You’ll hear the name used three ways:

  • Government talk: “Nagqu City” means the whole unit: Seni District plus ten counties.
  • Traveler talk: “We’re staying in Nagqu” almost always means hotels around Seni / Nagqu Town, often one night on a northbound or railway plan.
  • Corridor talk: Your train may stop at Nagqu or Amdo. Your hotel night, if you take one, still usually lands in Seni.

Nagqu Town sits inside Seni District, so English sites say Nagqu while formal Chinese paperwork says Seni. Hold region, overnight strip, and railway stop apart. Older books may say Nagchu or “Nagqu Prefecture”; the current label is Nagqu City (那曲市). For permits, use the district and county names on your operator’s plan. Same-series view: Lhasa city map.

Nagqu Administrative Map: How the Prefecture Fits on the Changtang

Once “city” means “northern region” in your head, an outline map helps more than a single hotel pin. On a Nagqu prefecture map, the same eleven units appear as one outline across the Changtang, north of Lhasa and astride the Qinghai–Tibet rail and road corridor.

Nagqu City administrative map (as of Oct 2026). The filled area is the whole northern region. Seni District holds the city government seat (the Nagqu Town / urban strip on most traveler maps). County lines help you place a stop; they do not mean every outline deserves a night.

Use this map for “where is the administrative center?” and “which county is that stop in?” Use a tourist or route map when you care about drive times and overnight towns. For “where is Nagqu in Tibet?”, see Where Is Nagqu Map.

Seni District: The Overnight Hub Travelers Actually Mean by “Nagqu”

Under that outline sits one district only. There is no county-level city under Nagqu. Everything else is a county, covered after the railway-town glance below.

Administrative unit Administrative center / seat Travel relevance Main transport entrance
Seni District (色尼区) City government at 浙江西路 3 号; district government at 文化中路 26 号. Includes subdistricts plus towns such as Nagqu Town, Luoma, and Gulu. Travelers still say Nagqu / Nagchu. Main overnight hub for a northern Tibet night: hotels, meals, station pickup. Nagqu Railway Station; G109 / G6 from Lhasa; local roads into nearby counties

Seni is the default “Nagqu night.” For a northern overnight on the Lhasa–railway corridor, or a pause before a specialist Changtang push, you usually sleep here instead of changing counties every evening.

Altitude here is a step up from Lhasa, not a soft landing (see the Tibet altitude map). Do not treat it as “catch your breath” after a busy Lhasa day. Rest first.

Weighing “one Seni night” against “train straight through”? Share dates and how you enter Tibet. We can shape a plan, then introduce a partner for permits and the on-ground contract.

Nagqu Districts Map: Towns Along the Railway and Highway

Before the county table, think in corridor towns (names on tickets and Chinese street addresses), not a sightseeing list.

Districts, counties, and main towns of Nagqu. Bold labels mark stops short and mid-length international tours often use. Fainter labels fill in the official map. Town dots are for addresses and stops, not a ranked attraction list.

How to read town names on this corridor

  • District / county name (Seni, Amdo, Bangoin) = the wider unit on permits.
  • Town / seat name (Nagqu Town, Pana, Pubao) = what often appears in a hotel or street address.
  • They are not always the same word. Example: Amdo County’s seat is Pana Town, not “Amdo Town” in every listing.
  • Common traveler dots: Seni urban strip, Gulu, Amdo / Pana on the Tanggula corridor, and Pubao (Bangoin) when a lake or north-route plan goes that way.
  • If a booking site only says “Nagqu,” ask for the Chinese address (区/县 + 镇/街道 or 乡).

Sights → Nagqu Tourist Map. Wider region → Nagqu Map.

Nagqu Counties on the Map: Which Ones Belong on Your Itinerary

The ten counties are administrative boxes on the civil-affairs map, not a sightseeing checklist. On a Nagqu counties map, use this table for travel relevance: which ones show up on real international routes.

Administrative unit Administrative center / seat Travel relevance Main transport entrance
Amdo County (安多县) Pana Town (帕那镇) Common on the corridor: Qinghai–Tibet Railway / Tanggula transit or brief stop; often pass-through Amdo Station; G109 / G6 corridor
Bangoin County (班戈县; also Baingoin) Pubao Town (普保镇; also Puba) Conditionally relevant: northern administrative side of Namtso; classic visitor shorelines often entered from Damxung (Lhasa) Local roads; operator-dependent north-of-lake routing
Xainza County (申扎县) Xainza Town (申扎镇) Conditionally relevant on Changtang lake / specialist northern plans Long northern roads; season and permit sensitive
Nyima County (尼玛县) Nyima Town (尼玛镇) Conditionally relevant on deeper Changtang or north route toward Ngari contexts Long western roads; specialist only on short holidays
Nyainrong County (聂荣县) Nyainrong Town (聂荣镇) Mostly administrative / specialist; uncommon on short packages Local roads north of Seni
Lhari County (嘉黎县) Azha Town (阿扎镇) Eastern Nagqu; not a default first-trip overnight Local roads
Biru County (比如县) Biru Town (比如镇) Eastern / interior; uncommon on short international holidays Local roads
Sog County (索县) Yala Town (亚拉镇) Mostly paperwork and logistics on standard holiday maps Local roads
Baqên County (巴青县; also Baqen) Laxi Town (拉西镇) Eastern Nagqu; uncommon on short packages Local roads
Shuanghu County (双湖县) Duoma Township (多玛乡) (township-level seat) Remote Changtang; specialist only; seat is a xiang, not a large town Remote roads; season and access critical

Corridor note: one Seni overnight via G6 or G109; through-train via Amdo / Nagqu; specialist Bangoin / Xainza / Nyima only when permits allow. Full routes → Nagqu Map.

Namtso note: the lake straddles Damxung (Lhasa) and Bangoin (Nagqu). Classic visitor shorelines are often reached from Damxung. See the Namtso Lake Map. A Nagqu county list does not mean “Namtso = a Nagqu day” by default.

Share dates and whether you want railway transit, one Seni overnight, or a Changtang / north-to-Ngari line. We can align counties, then introduce a licensed partner for permits, vehicles, and the contract. Access rules: Tibet permit map.

Qinghai–Tibet Railway, G109/G6, and Why Nagqu Still Has No Commercial Airport

Nagqu Daren Airport is planned / not a commercial passenger gateway you should book today. The real doors are the railway and the highway.

Nagqu Railway Station is a traveler entrance, not city hall; pickup goes to Seni hotels. Amdo Station serves Amdo County on through-train plans, still not “downtown Nagqu.”

Railway and highway vs Seni. The Qinghai–Tibet Railway and G109/G6 are the practical gateways into Nagqu. Seni District holds the seat of government and most traveler overnights. Station pins are transport portals, not city hall.

How people move: train through or stop in Seni; drive G6 (~3 h) or G109 (~6 h); no commercial flight into Nagqu today. Right counties on a permit still do not mean every high pass is open that week. Check close to departure.

Already have dates and a Lhasa–railway–northern overnight idea? Send them over. We will check whether a Seni night is worth it, then introduce a partner for permits and the contract.

Conclusion

Keep four pins clear:

  1. Seni District: administrative center and usual overnight base when people say “Nagqu.”
  2. Nagqu City: the whole Changtang prefecture (1 district + 10 counties), not one downtown.
  3. Qinghai–Tibet Railway + G109/G6: the real gateways; no commercial airport in passenger service.
  4. County choice: Amdo for corridor transit; Bangoin / Xainza / Nyima only when a specialist northern plan truly needs them; Namtso is cross-prefecture, with classic visitor access often via Damxung.

Use the towns glance map for hotel and ticket addresses; use the counties table for what belongs on a short holiday. When dates and a route draft are ready, we align the plan and introduce a partner. CHIBET plans and refers; the licensed operator holds contract, payment, and permits. More maps: Tibet Map hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: Nagqu City Map, Seni, Amdo, and Namtso Questions

Is Nagqu City the same as Seni / Nagqu Town?

Almost, in traveler talk; not exactly on the government map. Seni District is Nagqu’s administrative center. “We’re based in Nagqu” usually means hotels in that urban strip. “Nagqu City” alone can mean the whole northern prefecture.

Which counties show up on common international itineraries?

Most often Seni (overnight) and Amdo (corridor transit). Bangoin, Xainza, and Nyima appear on specialist northern plans. Several eastern counties stay administrative-only on short first trips.

Is Namtso in Nagqu?

Partly. The lake straddles Damxung (Lhasa) and Bangoin (Nagqu). Many classic visitor shorelines are reached from the Damxung side. See the Namtso Lake Map. Do not read a Nagqu county list as “Namtso is a Nagqu-only sight.”

How long is the drive from Lhasa to Nagqu?

About 3 hours via G6 in normal conditions; about 6 hours via G109. Weather, checks, and altitude can stretch either day. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

What’s the difference between this page, a “Nagqu Map,” and a “Nagqu Tourist Map”?
  • This page (Nagqu City / administrative map): government seat, Seni vs region, counties, bases, and gateways.
  • Nagqu Map (general): where Nagqu sits inside Tibet / next to Lhasa and the northern corridor.
  • Nagqu Tourist Map: sights, overnight towns, and route sketches, not the full government county list.

Sources & update: TAR civil-affairs division codes (2026 H1 announcement) and public seat listings for Nagqu City (那曲市, 540600) and units (Seni; Lhari, Biru, Nyainrong, Amdo, Xainza, Sog, Bangoin, Baqên, Nyima, Shuanghu); city government seat at 浙江西路 3 号 in Seni; district government at 文化中路 26 号; TAR reporting on G6 Lhasa–Nagqu (~3 h vs longer G109); public railway refs to Nagqu Station and Amdo Station; Nagqu Daren Airport planned / not in commercial passenger service; Namtso spanning Damxung (Lhasa) and Bangoin (Nagqu). Checked Oct 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Drive times and altitude are planning estimates. Verify permits, roads, and hotels before departure. Tsering Pema & Gangdrub, CHIBET
