10 Days Chengdu to Tibet Train Tour: Lhasa, Yamdrok, Everest, Namtso

ROUTEChengdu- Xining - Lhasa - Yamdrok - EBC - Namtso - Lhasa

Overview

This 10-day Chengdu Tibet tour starts in Chengdu, but the journey into Xizang is split into two stages rather than one long flight. First fly to Xining, then settle into a soft-sleeper berth for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to Lhasa. The gradual change outside the train window is part of the trip, not simply a transfer between cities.

From Lhasa, the route moves west to Shigatse and then into the Everest region, with Yamdrok Lake and Karola Glacier breaking up the drive. You stay near Everest rather than turning around the same day, then return through Shigatse for Tashilhunpo Monastery before heading back to Lhasa.

The last full day turns north from Lhasa to Namtso before the included flight back to Chengdu. This version is designed as a more comfortable small-group trip: the vehicle keeps part of its seating unused for extra space, and the package also includes selected 4-star hotels, oxygen-equipped stays in Shigatse and the Everest area, plus photography equipment for shared use during the journey.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1Arrive in Chengdu | A Comfortable Start Before Tibet

Distance: No scheduled sightseeing drive | Meals: None | Accommodation: Hotel near Chengdu Tianfu International Airport

Arrive in Chengdu and check in at the airport hotel. Nothing formal is scheduled for the rest of the day, so there is time to recover from the flight and get organized before the journey west begins tomorrow morning.

Keep your passport, Tibet Travel Permit and flight information together in your hand luggage. You will need the documents again when transferring from the flight to the Tibet-bound train in Xining.

DAY 2Chengdu - Xining - Qinghai-Tibet Railway | Fly, Then Board the Train

Distance: Approx. 1.5 hrs flight + overnight train journey | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: Soft sleeper on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

After breakfast, fly from Chengdu to Xining. The reference service currently used for the tour leaves Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in the morning, although the final flight time is confirmed with your departure documents.

In Xining, transfer to the station and board the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. A soft-sleeper berth is arranged for the group. Once the train starts climbing toward the plateau, the day becomes much less structured: settle in, watch the landscape widen outside the window and let the altitude increase gradually overnight.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Train numbers and departure times depend on ticket availability. Keep a small bag with toiletries, medication, snacks and anything you may want during the night so you do not need to unpack your main luggage in the compartment.

DAY 3Arrive in Lhasa | Step Off the Railway and Slow Down

Distance: Railway station to hotel transfer | Meals: None | Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Lhasa (3,650m)

The train reaches Lhasa after crossing the high plateau. Your Tibetan guide meets the group at Lhasa Railway Station and transfers you to the hotel along the Lhasa River valley.

The rest of the day is left free. The train makes the ascent more gradual, but arriving at 3,650 meters can still feel tiring. Have some water, unpack, take a short walk only if you feel comfortable, and save your energy for tomorrow’s city sightseeing.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
A train journey does not guarantee that altitude symptoms will be avoided. If you develop a headache, dizziness or unusual fatigue, rest and tell your guide rather than trying to push through it.

DAY 4Lhasa | Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street & Local Experiences

Distance: Local sightseeing in Lhasa | Meals: Breakfast, Tibetan Welcome Dinner | Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Lhasa (3,650m)

Today stays in central Lhasa. Begin at the Potala Palace, where the stairways lead through former living quarters, chapels, murals and memorial stupas. The building is familiar from photographs, but the interior explains far more about how religion and government once overlapped in Tibet.

After coming back down, pause around Longwangtan Park for a lower view of the palace and a little time away from the stairways. Later, continue into the old city for Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, where pilgrims, residents and visitors all move through the same compact network of lanes.

Authentic Tibetan Cultural Experiences:

Take a break for Tibetan sweet tea rather than moving straight from one monument to the next. A busy local teahouse gives the afternoon a more ordinary rhythm and a chance to sit among Lhasa residents for a while.

A Tibetan dress photoshoot is also included around the old quarter. Traditional clothing, styling and makeup are prepared before the photographer works through selected streets and Tibetan-style backdrops. This version is kept relaxed rather than staged as a formal studio session.

In the evening, meet the group for a Tibetan welcome dinner. The meal comes just before the overland section begins, giving everyone a chance to sit down together before several days of long-distance driving.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Entry time for the Potala Palace is assigned in advance and the sightseeing order may change. Photography is prohibited inside parts of the palace and restricted in some areas of Jokhang Temple.

DAY 5Lhasa - Yamdrok Lake - Karola Glacier - Shigatse | From Lake to Glacier

Distance: Approx. 360 km (about 8 hrs driving) | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: Oxygen-equipped 4-star hotel in Shigatse (3,840m)

Leave Lhasa and climb toward Gampala Pass. The first broad view of Yamdrok Lake appears from high above, with long turquoise curves running between dry mountain ridges.

The road later drops closer to the shoreline and continues through the Nyangchu Valley. Farther west, stop at Karola Glacier, where the ice descends unusually close to the highway and can be viewed without a long approach.

The journey then passes Gyantse, with distant views toward the old fortress and Kumbum area, before reaching Shigatse in the evening.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
High passes and the glacier area can be much colder than Lhasa even on a clear day. Keep a warm layer, hat and gloves within reach rather than packed in your suitcase.

DAY 6Shigatse - Tingri - Everest Base Camp | Overnight Beneath Everest

Distance: Approx. 340 km (about 8 hrs driving) | Meals: Breakfast, Tibetan Yak Hotpot Dinner | Accommodation: Rongbuk Hotel with oxygen supply or similar

The road leaves Shigatse and follows the Friendship Highway toward Tingri. As the plateau opens, the mountains ahead become more dominant. On a clear day, several of the great Himalayan peaks may appear during the drive, including Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Makalu.

Inside the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, continue toward Rongbuk Monastery and the Everest viewing area. The north face grows larger as the road drops through the final valleys, and there is time near Everest Base Camp before settling into the hotel for the night.

Evening Dining: A Hot Meal at Everest

Dinner tonight is a Tibetan Yak Hotpot. After a long day of high passes and cold air, the hot broth, yak meat and vegetables are exactly the sort of simple meal that works well at altitude.

Unlike some of our other Everest group tours, this route includes Rongbuk Hotel or a similar oxygen-equipped stay in the Everest area rather than a basic tent guesthouse.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Everest views, sunset and stars depend entirely on the weather. The hotel provides oxygen support, but you should still move slowly, keep warm and let your guide know if you feel unwell.

DAY 7Everest Base Camp - Tingri - Shigatse | Sunrise and the Road Back

Distance: Approx. 340 km (about 8 hrs driving) | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: Oxygen-equipped 4-star hotel in Shigatse (3,840m)

Wake early for a possible sunrise over Mount Everest. When the sky is clear, the upper slopes catch the first light before the valley below, but cloud can erase the view completely, so this remains a weather-dependent part of the morning.

There may be another chance to approach Everest Base Camp by eco-bus. Travelers who prefer to walk can choose the route from Rongbuk Monastery toward the base camp area, which takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours one way and feels considerably harder at this altitude.

After the Everest visit, return along the Friendship Highway through Tingri and continue to Shigatse for a second night.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
The optional walk near Everest is not necessary to enjoy the mountain. At this altitude, choosing the eco-bus can be the better decision if you are tired, short of breath or simply want to conserve energy for the long drive back.

DAY 8Shigatse - Tashilhunpo Monastery - Lhasa | Return Along the River Valley

Distance: Approx. 280 km (about 5-6 hrs driving) | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Lhasa (3,650m)

Before leaving Shigatse, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. The complex is still active, so worship, monastic life and historic architecture share the same courtyards rather than feeling separated into a museum-like visit.

Inside, the Maitreya Hall holds the monastery’s huge gilded image of the Future Buddha, while other halls contain murals, statues and memorial stupas connected with former Panchen Lamas.

After the visit, follow the Yarlung Tsangpo River east toward Lhasa. The road is lower and more direct than the Everest section, giving the day a noticeably easier finish.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Photography may be restricted or require an additional fee inside some monastery halls. Ask your guide before taking indoor photographs.

DAY 9Lhasa - Namtso Lake - Lhasa | One Last High-Plateau Day

Distance: Approx. 480 km round trip (full-day drive) | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Lhasa (3,650m)

The final sightseeing day heads north across the Northern Tibet Grasslands. Open valleys, grazing yak and the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains replace the more settled river country around Lhasa as the road climbs toward Namtso.

Cross Nagenla Pass before descending toward Namtso Lake, which sits at about 4,718 meters. The lake is enormous from the shore, with blue water stretching toward snow mountains rather than fitting neatly into a single viewpoint.

Spend time by the lakeside, then return to Lhasa in the late afternoon. It is a long round trip, so the stop at the lake is deliberately simple rather than packed with extra activities.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Namtso is much higher and often colder than Lhasa. Keep your movements slow, bring a warm outer layer and do not underestimate the wind even when the sky looks clear.

DAY 10Lhasa - Chengdu | Fly Back and Tour Ends

Distance: Approx. 2-2.5 hrs flight + airport transfer | Meals: Breakfast | Accommodation: None

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for the included flight back to Chengdu. The current reference flight departs in the early evening, but the final timing is confirmed with the issued ticket.

The tour ends after arrival in Chengdu. Ten days have combined two very different ways of crossing the plateau - the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on the way in, then the high road through Shigatse, Everest and Namtso before flying back out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this tour travel from Chengdu to Xining before taking the train to Lhasa?

This itinerary uses a flight from Chengdu to Xining before boarding the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Xining is the main gateway to the plateau railway, allowing the tour to combine a short domestic flight with the scenic train journey to Lhasa. This route also avoids spending more than 30 hours on the train from Chengdu itself.

How long is the Xining to Lhasa train journey?

The train journey from Xining to Lhasa takes approximately one day and one night, depending on the train service and timetable. The exact train number and departure time depend on ticket availability and are confirmed with the issued ticket. The soft-sleeper berth provides a more comfortable option for the overnight journey.

Does the train journey make altitude acclimatization easier?

The train climbs gradually toward the Tibetan Plateau, which can make the transition different from flying directly to Lhasa. However, taking the train does not guarantee that you will avoid altitude symptoms. Lhasa is still around 3,650 meters above sea level, so the first afternoon after arrival is deliberately kept free for rest.

What should I keep with me on the Xining-Lhasa train?

Keep your passport, Tibet Travel Permit, medication, valuables, toiletries, snacks and a change of clothes in a small bag that stays with you in the sleeper compartment. You may not need to access your main luggage during the overnight journey, so packing a separate train bag makes the trip easier.

How much time do I have to adjust to the altitude in Lhasa?

You arrive in Lhasa on Day 3 and have no scheduled sightseeing that afternoon. Day 4 is the first full sightseeing day in Lhasa, allowing you to spend your arrival afternoon resting at approximately 3,650 meters. The route then gradually moves toward Yamdrok, Shigatse and Everest.

Is this tour suitable for travelers who have never been to Tibet?

Yes. The itinerary includes a free arrival afternoon in Lhasa and two sightseeing days in the city before the longer road section begins. It also includes oxygen support during the Tibet journey. However, the route reaches very high elevations near Everest and Namtso, so travelers should be prepared for high-altitude conditions and long driving days.

What is the highest altitude on this tour?

The route reaches several high mountain passes on the way to Everest, while Namtso Lake is approximately 4,718 meters above sea level. Gawula Pass and other high passes along the Everest road are also above 5,000 meters. These high points are crossed by vehicle, but travelers may still feel the altitude when getting out at viewpoints.

How does the itinerary help with altitude acclimatization before Everest?

The route spends the first full sightseeing day in Lhasa before traveling through Yamdrok Lake and Shigatse. This gives travelers time at around 3,650–3,840 meters before continuing toward the higher Everest region. The itinerary does not eliminate altitude risk, so a slow pace and adequate rest remain important.

Is oxygen available during the Tibet journey?

Yes. Portable oxygen support is included during the Tibet journey, and the Everest-area accommodation also provides oxygen supply. Oxygen is a safety support rather than a replacement for acclimatization. If you develop significant symptoms, tell your guide and rest rather than trying to continue normally.

How long is the drive from Lhasa to Shigatse?

The Lhasa–Yamdrok–Gyantse–Shigatse section is approximately 360 kilometers and takes around eight hours including the sightseeing stops. The route combines Yamdrok Lake, high mountain passes, Karola Glacier and the Gyantse area before reaching Shigatse.

Is Yamdrok Lake visible from the road?

Yes. The route climbs toward Gampala Pass, where there is a broad elevated view over Yamdrok Lake. The road then descends closer to the lake before continuing toward Gyantse and Shigatse. Weather and visibility determine how clearly the surrounding mountains can be seen.

Can I see Karola Glacier without a long hike?

Yes. Karola Glacier is unusually close to the highway, so the visit does not require a long trek. You can view the glacier from the designated roadside area before continuing toward Gyantse and Shigatse. The area can be cold and windy, so keep warm clothing accessible.

What is the road to Everest like?

The journey from Shigatse toward Everest is a long high-altitude road day of approximately 340 kilometers and around eight hours of driving. The route passes through Tingri and climbs toward the Himalayan viewing areas. Road and weather conditions can affect the actual travel time.

Can I see Mount Everest from Gawula Pass?

When visibility is clear, Gawula Pass provides a wide Himalayan panorama and may offer views of Mount Everest and several other major peaks. Cloud, haze, snow and wind can obscure the mountains, however, so a completely clear Himalayan panorama cannot be guaranteed.

Can I see Everest at sunrise from the accommodation?

The Everest-area accommodation on this itinerary is at Rongbuk, close to the mountain. This makes an early-morning Everest viewing opportunity possible when weather and visibility are favorable. Sunrise colors, cloud conditions and the visibility of the summit cannot be guaranteed.

What is the Rongbuk Hotel like?

Rongbuk Hotel or a similar oxygen-supply accommodation is used for the Everest overnight stay. Accommodation in the Everest region is more basic than a standard city hotel because of the remote location and high altitude. The main advantage is staying close to the Everest viewing area rather than returning to a lower city.

Is there a shower at the Everest accommodation?

Facilities in the Everest region can be more limited than those in Lhasa or Shigatse. Exact room facilities depend on the hotel assigned for your departure date. Travelers should be prepared for simpler high-altitude accommodation and bring basic personal toiletries with them.

Is Everest Base Camp itself at the highest point of the tour?

Not necessarily. Several mountain passes on the route can be higher than the Everest viewing area. Namtso is also located at approximately 4,718 meters. The important point is that several parts of the itinerary take place above 4,000 meters, with some road crossings above 5,000 meters.

Why is Namtso visited after Everest rather than before?

The itinerary returns from Everest to Shigatse and then Lhasa before making the separate northbound journey to Namtso. This keeps the Everest section together as one road circuit and leaves Namtso as the final high-plateau sightseeing day. It also means you have already spent several days acclimatizing before reaching Namtso at approximately 4,718 meters.

How long is the Namtso day trip?

The Lhasa–Namtso–Lhasa journey is approximately 480 kilometers round trip and takes most of the day. The road crosses Nagenla Pass before descending toward the lake. Because this is a long high-altitude drive, the sightseeing at Namtso is intentionally kept simple rather than adding many additional activities.

Is Namtso colder than Lhasa?

Yes. Namtso is much higher and more exposed to wind than Lhasa, so it can feel considerably colder even when the weather in Lhasa is comfortable. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the Namtso day and avoid spending unnecessary time exposed to strong winds.

Can Namtso be visited in all seasons?

Namtso access depends on road and weather conditions, particularly during periods of snow or freezing temperatures. The itinerary schedules the lake as a full-day excursion, but temporary road restrictions, heavy snow or other local conditions can require changes to the planned visit.

Can the Lhasa sightseeing order change?

Yes. Potala Palace entry times are assigned in advance and visitor numbers are controlled, so the sightseeing order may change according to the confirmed admission time. The itinerary still aims to cover Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street and the other listed experiences whenever local arrangements allow.

Can I visit the monk debates at Sera Monastery?

The itinerary includes Sera Monastery, and the visit is planned around the active monk debate schedule when possible. Debate times can change because of monastery activities or religious events, so the exact timing cannot always be guaranteed.

How difficult are the long driving days?

The tour does not involve a multi-day trek, but several sightseeing days require long periods in the vehicle. The longest sections include the Lhasa–Shigatse journey, the Shigatse–Everest road and the 480-kilometer Namtso round trip. Travelers should be comfortable spending several hours on mountain roads and taking breaks at high altitude.

Can the itinerary change because of weather or road conditions?

Yes. Snow, strong winds, poor visibility, road maintenance and temporary local restrictions can affect travel in high-altitude areas. Everest and Namtso are particularly sensitive to weather and road conditions. If an adjustment is necessary, the local operating team will follow local safety and road requirements.

What should I pack for this Chengdu to Tibet train tour?

Pack warm layers, a down or insulated jacket, windproof outerwear, gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are useful for Lhasa's old city and monastery visits. Keep essential medication, documents and valuables in your hand luggage during both the flight and train journey.

How large is the group?

This is a small-group tour for approximately 2–12 travelers. The final group size depends on the departure date and confirmed bookings. Shared transportation allows the itinerary to combine Lhasa, Yamdrok, Everest and Namtso while keeping the overall cost lower than a private tour.
