Arrive in Lhasa, where your guide and driver meet you at the airport or railway station and transfer you to the hotel.

There is no sightseeing planned today. Lhasa is already at 3,650 meters, so the best start is a simple one: check in, drink some water and give your body time to catch up with the altitude. Most travelers feel the difference during the first day or two, and there is no prize for trying to do too much too soon.

The rest of the day is free to rest at the hotel before the road journey into eastern Tibet begins tomorrow.

The scenery softens quickly once the group leaves Lhasa and heads east. The road follows the river valleys toward Nyingchi, with mountains becoming greener as the elevation gradually drops.

Along the way, the route crosses Mila Pass before reaching Basomtso Lake.

Forest grows close to the water here, with snow-covered peaks rising beyond the lake. Spend time around the lakeside and small island area before continuing toward Nyingchi. It feels quite different from the broad, open lakes around central Tibet - more enclosed, greener and a little quieter.

The final stretch follows the Niyang River into Nyingchi. Tonight, the group also shares a Nyingchi Stone Pot Chicken Dinner, a warm and welcome end to the first full day on the road.

Today follows one of eastern Tibet's most scenic road corridors. From Nyingchi, the route climbs toward the Sejila area and then drops through Lulang on the way to Bomi.

Near Sejila Pass, there may be a clear view of Mount Namcha Barwa. Winter often brings better visibility, but the mountain still has a habit of disappearing behind cloud when it feels like it.

Continue through the forests and valleys around Lulang.

The road then heads toward Ranwu Lake. In winter, the lake and surrounding mountains take on a much colder, sharper look than in summer, with pale water, snow and dark forest often sharing the same view.

After the visit, continue to Bomi and settle in for the night.

CHIBET Travel Advice: A clear view of Mount Namcha Barwa is weather-dependent. Winter usually offers good visibility, but it can never be guaranteed.

This is the day the winter route is really built around.

Travel from Bomi toward the Laigu Glacier area, where several glaciers descend into high mountain valleys and glacial lakes. In the colder months, compressed ice can take on deep blue tones, especially where the ice is dense and the light is right.

From around Laigu Village, there are also views toward the wider glacier group, including the long Yalong Glacier. The landscape is big, cold and wonderfully uncluttered - glacier ice, frozen water and high peaks, with very little to distract from them.

Later in the day, turn back west and continue to Lulang for the night. After hours out in the winter landscape, a warm hotel feels especially good.

The group turns west today and begins the long return to Lhasa.

Before leaving the Nyingchi region, stop at Kading Tianfo Waterfall, set inside a steep forested gorge. A waterfall drops down the cliff face here, while natural rock shapes in the surrounding walls have long been connected with Buddhist imagery and local stories.

The rest of the day is mainly about the changing road. Forested valleys gradually open into drier plateau country as the vehicle climbs back toward central Tibet.

Arrive in Lhasa later in the day. After several nights on the road, you now have a full city day ahead rather than another early departure.

Today moves away from glaciers and mountain roads and into the cultural heart of Lhasa.

Start at the Potala Palace. The climb is steady, so the group takes it at a sensible pace. Inside, former living quarters, chapels, murals, religious objects and memorial stupas tell a much bigger story than the palace facade alone. Your guide helps connect the rooms and objects to the history of the Dalai Lamas and old Lhasa.

Later, visit Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims continue to arrive throughout the day to pray before the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni image. Outside, the traditional kora flows directly onto Barkhor Street.

There is no need to rush through Barkhor. Prayer wheels turn, incense drifts through the lanes and shops sit beside people who are here for very different reasons than sightseeing. That mix is part of what makes the old quarter feel alive rather than staged.

Near Barkhor, slip into a neighborhood teahouse for a cup of Tibetan sweet tea. A warm cup of the milky tea gives the day a slower, more local moment between the major sights.

Later, change pace with a Tibetan dress photoshoot in the old quarter. Traditional clothing, hair styling and makeup are arranged before the photographer leads you through a few characterful lanes around Barkhor. The experience is playful rather than formal, and the finished photos make a very personal souvenir of Lhasa.

The day closes with a Tibetan welcome dinner shared with the group. After the temples, old streets and cultural stops, it is nice to sit down together over local dishes and talk through the day without another schedule to follow.

Leave Lhasa and begin the westbound road journey toward Shigatse. This is one of the classic drives across central Tibet, with a sacred lake, a roadside glacier and wide farming valleys all in the same day.

The road first climbs to Gampala Pass, where Yamdrok Lake appears far below in long blue curves between the mountains. The group then descends toward the lakeshore for a closer view before continuing west.

Later, stop at Karola Glacier, where a wall of ice descends unusually close to the road beneath the surrounding peaks. There is no long hike here, which makes the scale of the glacier feel almost immediate.

Continue across the Gyantse Plain, with a distant view of Gyantse Fortress along the way, before reaching Shigatse in the evening.

Today the landscape gets higher, emptier and more Himalayan with every hour on the road.

Leaving Shigatse, travel through Lhatse and continue toward Tingri. The route climbs over Gyatso La Pass, where prayer flags cover the high saddle and, on a clear day, Mount Everest may appear far ahead for the first time.

In the afternoon, enter the Mount Everest Nature Reserve and continue toward Rongbuk Monastery. An eco-bus then carries the group to Everest Base Camp, where the north face of Everest fills the end of the valley.

There is time around the main viewing area before heading to your selected accommodation in the Everest region. If the sky stays clear after dark, the stars can be excellent here - although, as always at this altitude, the weather decides what you get to see.

By evening, a steaming Tibetan Yak Hotpot is waiting. Yak meat, vegetables and broth come together in one bubbling pot - uncomplicated, warming food that feels especially good after hours on the high plateau and the cold around Everest.

There are three ways to stay in the Everest area. The right choice depends on how much comfort you want and whether being close enough for a possible sunrise matters to you.

EBC Tent Guesthouse: Stay closest to the Everest viewing area in a simple double-bed room. Private showers are not available and toilets are shared, but the location keeps you near the mountain and gives you the chance to see sunrise the next morning when the weather is clear.

Vienna International Hotel: A more comfortable option with private bathrooms and better overall room facilities. The trade-off is distance: guests staying here will not return to Everest Base Camp for sunrise the following morning.

Upgrading to Rongbuk Hotel: The best balance of comfort and location for travelers who want to stay close to Mount Everest. A supplement is required, and the upgrade price changes with the season and room availability, so the exact rate is confirmed separately.

For some guests, the morning begins with one more chance to see Mount Everest before the group turns back toward Shigatse.

Guests staying at the EBC Tent Guesthouse or the upgraded Rongbuk Hotel can rise early for a possible Everest sunrise. When skies are clear, the first light reaches the upper slopes before the valley brightens.

Guests at the Vienna International Hotel will not return to Everest Base Camp for sunrise because of the hotel's location; your guide will confirm the group meeting time before departure.

The return route climbs back through the Himalayan passes, including Gawula Pass, one of the broadest viewpoints across the range. On a clear day, several 8,000-meter peaks can be seen along the horizon.

Continue through Tingri and Lhatse, then follow the long valley road back to Shigatse for the night.

Before leaving Shigatse, spend the morning at Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas and one of the major active monasteries of the Gelug school.

The monastery is large enough to feel like a small town. Monks cross the courtyards between prayer halls, pilgrims move along the outer paths and the main buildings hold murals, memorial stupas and the towering gilded Maitreya Buddha.

After the visit, drive east along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley toward Lhasa. This return is more direct than the earlier route through Yamdrok and Karola, so the afternoon settles into an easier rhythm.

Arrive back in Lhasa and check in for the night.

One last long road day takes the group north into a very different kind of Tibetan landscape.

The highway crosses the Northern Tibetan Grasslands, with yak herds, wide valleys and the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains appearing along the route. The road then climbs over Nagela Pass before dropping toward Namtso.

At around 4,718 meters, Namtso Lake feels exposed and enormous. In winter, the shore is cold and often windy, but the clear air can make the lake and surrounding mountains look especially sharp.

Spend some time by the lake, then return to Lhasa in the afternoon. It is a long round trip, so the pace at the lakeshore stays simple: take in the view, take a few photos and keep moving slowly at this altitude.
