Shannan Map: Attractions, Altitude, Hotels and Restaurants

Use this Shannan map to connect Samye, Tsetang, Yumbulakang and Yamdrok from Lhasa without backtracking, with hotels and travel times.

Shannan lies immediately south of Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo. The cleanest route crosses from Lhasa to Samye, Tsetang and the Yarlung Valley, then continues through Yamdrok Lake to Gyantse in two full travel days, with Tsetang as the overnight base.

Shannan Travel Route Map: Avoid Backtracking by Continuing to Gyantse

Shannan works best as a two-day crossing, with Tsetang as the overnight base. Samye fits on the first travel day; Yamdrok belongs on the onward day rather than on a separate return trip.

Important: International visitors travel in Tibet through a qualified agency with the required permit, guide and tourist vehicle. Passport and China visa copies should be submitted well ahead of departure. Requirements were last checked against Shannan tourism guidance on 15 October 2026.

The Two-Day Shannan Tourist Map in Real Driving Time

A practical escorted itinerary uses the following order:

Tour day Organized route Typical overnight Typical drive time Road distance (typical)
Day 1 Lhasa → Samye Monastery → Yumbulakang/Tsetang Tsetang 3 h 160 km
Day 2 Tsetang → Yamdrok Lake → Gyantse Gyantse 7-8 h 340 km

One published 2026 route lists about 165 km for the first day and about 340 km for Tsetang–Yamdrok–Gyantse. Exact distances vary with hotels, bridge choice and the approved sightseeing stops.

This route suits travelers who want more cultural context than a direct Lhasa–Gyantse transfer provides. Samye, Yumbulakang and Trandruk tell a connected story about early Tibetan history, while the Yarlung Valley gives the journey a gentler first day before the higher Yamdrok road. It is less suitable if the schedule has only one spare day: compressing the valley and lake into a single run leaves little time at the sites and turns the route into a transport exercise.

This Shannan travel route map is more useful than a collection of loops from Tsetang because the route keeps moving toward Gyantse.

Shannan is not included in every budget join-in departure. The Lhasa–Samye–Tsetang–Gyantse line is more common in longer cultural groups or approved private tours. Readers should check the actual departure calendar rather than assume they can attach the section to a standard Lhasa package.

Draw the solid group line from Lhasa through Samye and Tsetang, then west through Yamdrok to Gyantse. Add Gonggar Airport only as an organized pickup point, not as an independent entry to Shannan.

Shannan Attractions Map: Group the Valley Sights, Then Climb to Yamdrok

Samye works on the travel day from Lhasa because it lies on a distinct road stage before Tsetang. Yumbulakang and Trandruk belong to the compact Yarlung Valley cluster near the group hotel.

The exact combination depends on opening hours and the booked itinerary. A group that lists only Samye and Yumbulakang cannot assume that Trandruk will be added after arrival.

Yamdrok Lake belongs on the onward day to Gyantse. Treating it as a return excursion from Tsetang creates unnecessary road time and may not match the approved operation.

Use numbered tour stops: Lhasa departure, Samye, Tsetang hotel, Yumbulakang/Trandruk cluster, Yamdrok and Gyantse. Keep remote southern areas outside the main planning layer unless they are part of a confirmed itinerary.

Shannan Hotel Map: Tsetang Earns Its Place as the Overnight Base

The Shannan hotel map should show the contracted Tsetang hotel zone and its road relationship to Samye, the Yarlung sights and the next morning’s Yamdrok departure.

Compare room standards, heating, bathroom type and breakfast time before booking. Tsetang is more practical than shifting to a smaller settlement because it serves both the Yarlung sights and the next morning’s departure.

Useful questions are heating, private bathroom, breakfast time, luggage handling and whether the vehicle can load early. These affect the group day more than a restaurant or hotel popularity ranking.

Shannan Restaurant Map: Plan Meals Around the Road, Not Rankings

The Shannan restaurant map should identify Lhasa departure, an arranged lunch area near the route, Tsetang dinner options and the next day’s road meal toward Gyantse.

Dining choice is broadest in Tsetang. Share dietary requests before travel so meals can be coordinated on the long road day toward Yamdrok and Gyantse.

Mark the Tsetang group hotel area, planned meal zones, legal tourist-vehicle route and onward direction. Label dynamic information “Last checked: 15 October 2026.”

Shannan Altitude Map: The Big Change Comes After Tsetang

Tsetang is about 3,500 m and Yumbulakang roughly 3,700 m. The onward road climbs toward Yamdrok Lake above 4,400 m and crosses a pass close to 4,800–5,000 m before reaching Gyantse.

The Shannan altitude map should start in Lhasa, show the relatively moderate Tsetang night and then the much higher second travel day. This explains the early departure and why Tsetang is the most useful pause before Yamdrok.

Plot Lhasa, Tsetang, Yamdrok, the high pass and Gyantse in tour order. Separate the hotel elevation from the brief pass elevation.

What to Leave Outside the Main Shannan Tourist Map

Shannan extends to sensitive border areas, but the map should not display every county as a reachable tourist destination. Include only the stops confirmed in the tour product or approved private itinerary.

Do not turn every visible road into a suggested route. The solid line should show the workable Lhasa–Samye–Tsetang–Gyantse sequence. Remote southern roads belong in a grey orientation layer until the operating agency confirms access and logistics.

For a private tour, travelers may request more time at Samye, a second Tsetang night or a slower Yamdrok day before the permit process begins. The legal requirements remain the same as for a group: qualified agency, guide, approved itinerary and properly licensed tourist transport.

Book or compare this route: Shannan cultural group departures

The cleanest plan is a guided crossing rather than a set of repeated day trips. Travel from Lhasa to Samye and Tsetang, explore the Yarlung Valley cluster, then continue through Yamdrok to Gyantse.

CHIBET can help compare escorted and private itinerary options. Its licensed Tibet operating partner handles the contract, permits, guide, legal vehicle, hotels and operation.

Verification note: Policy statements were checked against Shannan Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau guidance dated 18 September 2026. Vehicle requirements were checked against the Tibet culture and transport authorities’ enforcement notice dated 22 June 2026. Route order uses a published 2026 international escorted itinerary as an operational example.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shannan Map FAQs

Can I visit Samye from Lhasa independently?

No. Samye must be included in the organized tour itinerary with the agency’s guide and transport arrangements.

Is Tsetang usually included in a join-in Tibet tour?

It is less common than Lhasa, Shigatse and Everest, but some escorted cultural itineraries include a Lhasa–Samye–Tsetang–Gyantse section. Confirm the actual departure rather than assuming it is part of every group.

Can I stay in Tsetang and take local buses to the sights?

No. The tour operator arranges the permitted sightseeing route and vehicle.

Can Yamdrok be added on the day of departure?

Only if it is already compatible with the approved route and the operator confirms the change. The normal efficient placement is between Tsetang and Gyantse.
