Nagqu Map: Attractions, Altitude, Hotels and Restaurants

Use this Nagqu map to plan Namtso from Lhasa via Damxung, compare day and overnight routes, and understand altitude, hotels and driving time.

Nagqu stretches across the Changthang plateau north of Lhasa. For most visitors the usable route is Lhasa to Namtso via Damxung, either as a long day trip or with a Damxung overnight; Nagqu City, Amdo and the western lakes need separate confirmed itineraries.

Nagqu Travel Route Map: Compare the One-Day and Two-Day Plans

The one-day version keeps the same Lhasa hotel and avoids another high night, but it creates a long driving day. The Damxung version spreads the road time and offers a slower pace, though accommodation is simpler and the itinerary costs more.

Important: International visitors travel in Tibet through a qualified agency with the required permit, guide and tourist vehicle. The final route and overnight must be arranged in advance. Requirements and route patterns were last checked on 15 October 2026.

The Common Nagqu Tourist Map: Lhasa to Namtso and Back

Current join-in tours normally place Namtso after one or two Lhasa sightseeing days.

Tour day Organized route Typical overnight Typical drive time Road distance (typical)
1 Arrive in Lhasa; group pickup Lhasa — —
2–3 Guided Lhasa sightseeing Lhasa — —
4 Lhasa → Nyenchen Tanglha → Damxung → Namtso → Lhasa Lhasa 9-10 h 480 km (round trip)
5 Departure transfer or next contracted tour stage — — —

Some longer products use Damxung as the overnight and return the following day. Choose this version before booking; it is not an on-the-road extension from Namtso.

The one-day return version is common because it keeps the group in its Lhasa hotel and avoids an additional high overnight. A Damxung night can reduce same-day driving, but it changes the hotel booking and must be part of that departure from the beginning.

Choose this plan Best for Main trade-off
Namtso day trip Short itineraries and travelers who prefer returning to Lhasa More hours in the vehicle and less flexibility at the lake
Damxung overnight Travelers who want a less compressed road schedule Simpler hotel standards and an extra high-altitude night

Do not choose the overnight version only to “see more Nagqu.” Its real benefit is pacing. The scenery follows the same corridor, while weather, access and group timing still determine how long you can remain near Namtso.

Use a solid line for Lhasa–Damxung–Namtso–Lhasa. Show Nagqu City and Amdo as grey orientation points, not as stops on the standard join-in route.

Nagqu Attractions Map: Keep the Focus on the Namtso Corridor

The Nagqu attractions map should give full detail to the Lhasa approach, Nyenchen Tanglha viewpoints, Damxung service stop and the approved Namtso visitor area.

Changthang grassland scenery can be experienced from the legal tourist-vehicle corridor. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and protected habitat is not an off-road safari area.

Silin Tso and Tangra Yumco should not be drawn as solid extensions from Namtso. They require a separate long-distance plan and are not routine additions to the standard Namtso group. If a specialized departure is confirmed, it deserves its own map.

Show confirmed group stops in full color. Label western lakes “not on the standard join-in itinerary; route-specific confirmation required.”

Nagqu Altitude Map: The High Point Comes After a Fast Ascent

Lhasa is around 3,650 m, while Namtso is above 4,700 m and the approach crosses a higher pass area. The common group visits the lake after the Lhasa acclimatization days and returns to the lower, better-served capital.

The Nagqu altitude map should therefore show a high daytime excursion followed by a Lhasa overnight. Amdo at roughly 4,800 m is not a natural next night on the standard Namtso plan.

The group schedule cannot guarantee individual acclimatization. Travelers with worsening symptoms must inform the guide; the operator may adjust the visit according to health, weather and access.

Plot Lhasa, Damxung, the pass area and Namtso, then the return to Lhasa. If a product uses a Damxung night, show it as that tour’s specific variant.

Nagqu Hotel Map: When a Damxung Night Is Worth It

On the standard tour, the Nagqu hotel map should show the Lhasa hotel and, where applicable, the Damxung property. Nagqu City or Amdo hotels are irrelevant unless the itinerary actually continues north.

If the tour stays in Damxung, ask about heating, private bathroom and breakfast. Individual hotel changes must go through the operating agency because the vehicle, guide and group departure time are coordinated.

Nagqu Restaurant Map: Carry the Day’s Essentials from Lhasa

The Nagqu restaurant map should mark breakfast in Lhasa, a planned Damxung or route lunch and the return dinner area. A Namtso day can be long, so package inclusions and packed-food arrangements should be checked before departure.

Dietary requirements must be submitted to the agency in advance. Do not depend on finding a suitable lakeside restaurant after arrival.

Mark Lhasa hotel pickup, legal tourist-vehicle route, Damxung service area, approved Namtso visitor zone and return. Exclude independent car hire and public-bus suggestions.

When Nagqu City, Amdo or the Western Lakes Need a Separate Map

These places belong only in a specialized itinerary with confirmed access and logistics. The railway is not a shortcut for creating an independent sightseeing plan after arrival.

Extended western routes may change with policy, weather, protected-area rules and local operating capacity. They should be treated as custom, provisional operations—not as stable map products copied from domestic self-drive guides.

Even an approved private tour is not permission to improvise. The agency must confirm the complete line, including where the group sleeps, which visitor entrances operate and whether the tourist vehicle is authorized for every stage. Until that evidence exists, the western lakes should remain outside the actionable map.

This distinction protects the page from making a promise that the operator cannot legally deliver. It also gives readers a clearer choice: book the established Namtso route, or ask for a separate feasibility check before considering a remote Nagqu journey.

Book or compare this route: Namtso join-in departures

For most first visits, the useful map is Lhasa–Damxung–Namtso–Lhasa. Choose the one-day plan for fewer hotel changes, or the Damxung night for a less compressed journey. Treat Nagqu City and the western lakes as a separate trip, not as bonus pins.

CHIBET can compare Namtso join-in departures and enquire about specialized routes. Its licensed Tibet operating partner handles the contract, permit, guide, legal vehicle, accommodation and operation.

Verification note: Foreign-tour requirements were checked against Shannan Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau guidance dated 18 September 2026. Vehicle statements were checked against the Tibet culture and transport authorities’ enforcement notice dated 22 June 2026. The solid map line follows published 2026 Lhasa–Namtso foreign join-in products; western routes remain unconfirmed unless a licensed operator approves them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nagqu Map FAQs

Can I go from Lhasa to Namtso independently?

No. Namtso must be included in the organized itinerary operated by a qualified agency.

Can I continue from Namtso to Nagqu City by myself?

No. Continuing north would require an approved itinerary and the agency’s guide and legal vehicle arrangements.

Can Silin Tso and Tangra Yumco be added to the Namtso trip?

Do not assume general access. They are not part of the standard Namtso join-in route used here. Ask a licensed operator to confirm the exact route and approvals before presenting them as bookable.

Can I take the train to Nagqu City?

A train sector may be included in an organized plan, but it does not create an independent-travel option. The guide and approved sightseeing arrangements still apply.
