Mount Kailash Map: 13 Best Maps and Essential Route Guide

This Mount Kailash map guide shows where the mountain is in Tibet and how travelers reach it. The 13 maps cover its world and regional location, Darchen, the Kora, Lake Mansarovar, Ngari routes, India and Nepal border crossings, and the main approaches from Lhasa, Kathmandu, India and Xinjiang.

This Mount Kailash map guide shows the mountain in western Tibet, China, in Burang County of Ngari Prefecture. It stands north of India and northwest of Nepal, in the Gangdise Range of the Trans-Himalaya.

That location sounds straightforward until you open a small map. India and Nepal look almost within touching distance. Lhasa appears to sit in the same corner of Tibet, and Lake Mansarovar seems to be right under the mountain. The map is not wrong. The scale is.

Western Tibet is big enough to make short lines deceptive. A place that looks nearby may still be a full day by road, sometimes more, so this Mount Kailash map collection moves from the broad location into the details that actually matter: Darchen, the Kora, Lake Mansarovar, the border crossings and the main routes in.

Quick Facts Location

Main visitor activity The Mount Kailash Kora

You may also see Mount Kailash named Gang Rinpoche, Gang Tise or Kangrinboqê. Tibetan place names rarely settle on one English spelling, so do not assume two maps are showing different mountains just because the labels look different.

Important: These route maps are for orientation, not navigation. Roads, permits and border arrangements can change, and western Tibet is not a region where an old map should win an argument with a current travel permit.

Where Is Mount Kailash on the World Map?

On a world Mount Kailash map, the mountain is in Asia near the southwestern edge of China. Look just north of India on the western Tibetan Plateau and you are in the right area.

The mountain is entirely within China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Its close ties with Hinduism, along with its position near India and Nepal, often blur that simple fact. But politically and geographically, Mount Kailash is not in India or Nepal.

Where Is Mount Kailash in Asia?

Mount Kailash location in Asia north of India and northwest of Nepal
Mount Kailash in Asia, north of India and northwest of Nepal.

Within Asia, India lies directly south of Mount Kailash, Nepal is farther southeast and Pakistan is to the west. Bhutan is well to the east. Kathmandu is a common starting city for Kailash trips, but it is a gateway, not the location of the mountain.

Mount Kailash belongs to the Gangdise Range, often called the Kailash Range, north of the main Himalayan chain. This matters more than the geology lesson might suggest. The scenery around Kailash is not the green, forested Himalaya many travelers picture from Nepal. It is higher, drier and much more open, with settlements spread thinly across the plateau.

Much of Ngari sits above 4,500 meters. Before the Kora has properly started, you are already sleeping at an altitude that would be the high point of many other treks.

Where Is Mount Kailash in China?

Mount Kailash in far western China within the Tibet Autonomous Region
Mount Kailash in far western China within the Tibet Autonomous Region.

On a map of China, Mount Kailash is close to the country’s far southwestern edge. Xinjiang is to the north; Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu are a very long way east. China’s outline compresses distance rather brutally, so this is not a side trip you add after two free days in a major city.

No, there is no direct train to Mount Kailash, and Darchen has no airport. Ngari Gunsa Airport is about 197 kilometers away by road, while the newer Purang Airport is closer to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

Where Is Mount Kailash in Tibet?

Mount Kailash in western Tibet around 1200 kilometers by road from Lhasa
Mount Kailash in western Tibet, roughly 1,200 kilometers by road from Lhasa to Darchen.

A detailed Mount Kailash map places the mountain in the far west of Tibet, roughly 1,200 kilometers by road from Lhasa to Darchen. The exact figure changes with the itinerary, especially when Everest Base Camp is included, but the basic point does not: this is a cross-Tibet journey, not an airport-to-hotel transfer.

Most overland routes pass through or near:

  • Lhasa
  • Gyantse
  • Shigatse
  • Lhatse, Tingri or Everest Base Camp
  • Saga or Zhongba
  • Lake Mansarovar
  • Darchen
  • Yamdrok Lake

After Shigatse, one route turns toward Everest Base Camp before continuing west to Saga. A more direct itinerary stays on the main westbound road through Lhatse, Tingri or Zhongba. Both eventually reach the same wider Kailash area, but the number of driving days and the altitude profile are different.

Several days on the road are normal. We would be suspicious of an itinerary that treats them as dead time and tries to rush through, because those stops break up long drives and help you adjust before sleeping in Darchen at about 4,670 meters. The official 2026 Nathu La program also builds in acclimatization before reaching Darchen. There is a reason for that.

Where Is Mount Kailash in Ngari?

Mount Kailash in Burang County of Ngari Prefecture in western Tibet
Mount Kailash in Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, western Tibet.

Ngari is the western prefecture of Tibet; some maps use the Chinese name Ali. Mount Kailash is in Burang County in southern Ngari, close to Darchen, Purang, Lake Mansarovar and Lake Rakshastal.

Farther northwest are Zanda and the ruins of the Guge Kingdom. Shiquanhe is the main urban and transport center, though “urban” is relative here. Once you leave the larger towns, the road can run for hours through open plateau with very little around it.

Tibet travel agencies usually describe Ngari trips as the southern route, northern route, central route or grand loop. These are useful labels, not names you will see neatly printed on every road sign.

  • The southern route
  • The northern route
  • The central route
  • The grand loop

The southern route approaches Kailash from Lhasa or Shigatse through Saga. The central route often uses the same approach, then continues northeast toward Namtso without completing the full northern circuit.

The northern route crosses the remote lake country around Namtso, Serling Tso, Nima and Coqen. The grand loop combines the southern approach with a return across northern Ngari. It is the most complete option, but it is also a serious road journey; do not choose it just because the loop looks tidy on a map.

Where Is Darchen and Where Does the Mount Kailash Kora Begin?

Darchen town south of Mount Kailash and the starting point of the outer Kora
Darchen south of Mount Kailash, the main base for the outer Kora.

A local Mount Kailash map shows Darchen as the small town south of the mountain where most outer Kora trips begin and end. Indian government itineraries may call it Tarqin. Same place.

At roughly 4,670 meters, Darchen is where travelers usually sleep before the walk, and arrange porter or animal support when it is available. It is often called the Mount Kailash base camp, which is convenient shorthand but slightly misleading. This is a pilgrimage base, not a mountaineering camp, and nobody is preparing for climbing Kailash.

Three day Mount Kailash outer Kora route from Darchen over Dolma La Pass
The three-day Mount Kailash outer Kora from Darchen via Dirapuk, Dolma La and Zutulpuk.

The usual outer Kora follows this line:

Darchen → Tarboche or Yam Dwar → Dirapuk → Dolma La Pass → Gauri Kund → Zutulpuk → Darchen

Most international travelers take three days. Published distances vary because some sources start measuring in Darchen and others at Yam Dwar, but about 48–52 kilometers is the useful working figure.

The official 2026 Nathu La itinerary divides the route into sections of about 19, 19 and 12 kilometers, including the first vehicle transfer from Darchen, and lists Dolma La at about 5,590 meters.

Day two is the day to respect. The trail from Dirapuk climbs over Dolma La and then drops toward Zutulpuk. It is not technical climbing, but at more than 5,500 meters an ordinary slope can feel personally insulting, and the weather is free to change its mind halfway across the pass.

Where Is Lake Mansarovar from Mount Kailash?

Lake Mansarovar southeast of Mount Kailash near Darchen and Lake Rakshastal
Lake Mansarovar southeast of Mount Kailash, near Darchen and Lake Rakshastal.

A Mount Kailash map usually places Lake Mansarovar southeast of the mountain. The two may look like next-door neighbors; they are close by Ngari standards, but the lake is a separate stop and not part of the Kora itself.

The lake sits at around 4,590 meters, beside Lake Rakshastal. Darchen is commonly described as about 36 kilometers away, although maps may show anything from roughly 20 kilometers upward depending on whether they measure from the summit, the foot of the mountain or a particular point on the lakeshore.

Most travelers go between Mansarovar and Darchen by vehicle. A common order is:

Lake Mansarovar → Darchen → Mount Kailash Kora

Some itineraries visit the lake after the Kora. We care less about which one comes first than whether the schedule gives you a proper rest before the walk. Squeezing in another photo stop is not worth arriving at the trail already tired.

Chiu Monastery is often marked near the lake. Lake Rakshastal lies immediately to the west, separated from Mansarovar by a narrow strip of land and a natural channel. From above they almost touch, yet their water systems and religious meanings are quite different.

Which India and Nepal Border Crossings Lead toward Mount Kailash?

Important: A border line on a map is not an open door. The route you can actually use depends on your nationality, permits, an approved crossing, and whatever arrangements are in force for your travel dates.

Routes Connected with India

For 2026, India’s Ministry of External Affairs is operating the official Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through:

  • Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand
  • Nathu La Pass in Sikkim

The program lists ten batches on each route and is open to eligible Indian citizens with valid passports. The Lipulekh itinerary is about 22 days and the Nathu La itinerary about 21 days.

Lipulekh is much closer to the Kailash region.

Nathu La sits far to the east, so participants travel a long way across southern Tibet before reaching Darchen. It looks like a strange detour because it is not designed as the shortest tourist road; it is a controlled government pilgrimage route.

Routes Connected with Nepal

The main overland crossing is the Rasuwagadhi-Gyirong corridor. From Gyirong, travelers continue through the Tibetan road network toward Saga, Lake Mansarovar and Darchen.

Farther west, the Hilsa-Burang crossing is used on trips marketed as “Mount Kailash by helicopter.” That phrase does a lot of work. The helicopter normally covers part of the Nepal section, usually around Nepalgunj, Simikot and Hilsa. After the border, you continue by road through Purang. The helicopter does not land at Mount Kailash.

We never treat a crossing shown on a map as confirmed access. Border status can change, and the same crossing may be open to one group of travelers but not another.

What Are the Main Routes to Mount Kailash?

Main travel routes to Mount Kailash from Lhasa, Kathmandu, India, Nepal and Xinjiang.

No single Mount Kailash map can show a universal “best” route. The choice comes down to your passport, starting city, schedule and how quickly your body is being asked to climb. The table gives the basic differences; here is the less polished version.

Route Main starting point What makes it different
Lhasa route Lhasa Longest common approach, with more time to acclimatize
Kathmandu overland route Kathmandu Shorter geographically, but altitude rises faster
Indian official routes India Government-organized routes for eligible Indian citizens
Helicopter-assisted Nepal route Nepalgunj and Simikot Saves some road time but does not fly to Kailash
Xinjiang route Kashgar and Yecheng Remote G219 journey into western Ngari

Get to Mount Kailash from Lhasa

For most first-time international travelers, this is the route we would choose. It runs west through Shigatse and Saga, and some versions add Everest Base Camp. Yes, it takes longer. It also gives you several nights at increasing altitude before Darchen, which is usually a better bargain than saving a day and spending the Kora feeling miserable.

Get to Mount Kailash from Kathmandu through Gyirong

The Kathmandu-Gyirong route is shorter on the map, but Kathmandu is low compared with the Tibetan Plateau. Once you cross the border, the altitude rises quickly. A decent itinerary slows down around Gyirong and Saga; a bad one treats Darchen like a finish line and races west.

Get to Mount Kailash from India

Eligible Indian citizens can apply for the official Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through Lipulekh or Nathu La. Batch dates, costs and eligibility are published by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and can change each year. Commercial tours sold in India may instead travel through Nepal, so read the route carefully rather than relying on the words “from India.”

Get to Mount Kailash by Helicopter through Nepal

The usual sequence is:

Kathmandu or Lucknow → Nepalgunj → Simikot → Hilsa → Purang → Lake Mansarovar → Darchen

Only the Nepal section uses a helicopter. It cuts some road time but moves you from low elevations toward the high plateau very quickly. Fast on paper does not always feel fast to the body.

Get to Mount Kailash from Xinjiang

The Xinjiang approach follows the G219 from the Kashgar-Yecheng area toward Shiquanhe, Zanda and Darchen. It crosses remote country with long gaps between settlements and a sharp rise in altitude. We see it as part of a bigger Xinjiang-Tibet road expedition, not a clever shortcut to Kailash.

Do Not Confuse Mount Kailash with Other Kailash Mountains

Map comparing Mount Kailash in Tibet with four Panch Kailash mountains in India
Mount Kailash in Tibet and the four other Panch Kailash pilgrimage mountains in India.

The shared name causes more confusion than the geography. A Mount Kailash map of Tibet should not be confused with maps of the other four sacred mountains in India commonly grouped with it as the Panch Kailash.

The five are:

  • Mount Kailash in Tibet
  • Adi Kailash in Uttarakhand
  • Kinnaur or Kinner Kailash in Himachal Pradesh
  • Shrikhand Kailash in Himachal Pradesh
  • Manimahesh Kailash in Himachal Pradesh

They are separate mountains and pilgrimage sites, not regional names for the same peak. Adi Kailash causes the most mix-ups because it resembles Mount Kailash and is sometimes promoted as an alternative pilgrimage. Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Kailash and Manimahesh Kailash are all in Himachal Pradesh.

When an international map or Tibet travel guide says simply “Mount Kailash,” it normally means the mountain in Ngari, western Tibet. Check the state, county or coordinates before you book anything; the word Kailash alone is not enough.

Most sources give the outer Kora as roughly 48–52 kilometers. The official 2026 Nathu La itinerary divides about 50 kilometers of vehicle and trekking sections over three days.

Which route to Mount Kailash is best?

For most first-time international visitors, we prefer the Lhasa route because it allows a more gradual approach to altitude. Kathmandu through Gyirong is shorter but climbs faster; eligible Indian citizens also have the official Lipulekh and Nathu La programs. Pick the route your passport allows and your body has a fair chance of handling.

Conclusion

The most useful Mount Kailash map facts are simple: the mountain is in Burang County of Ngari Prefecture; Darchen is the Kora base; Lake Mansarovar lies southeast; and the main approaches come through Lhasa, Nepal, India or Xinjiang.

Before booking, confirm the permit route, border access, flights and acclimatization plan for your exact dates. Do not let the shortest line on a map make the decision for you. In western Tibet, one sensible rest day is usually worth more than shaving a few hours off the road.
