Chamdo Map: Attractions, Altitude, Hotels and Routes

Explore Chamdo on a map: pair Ranwu Lake with Laigu Glacier, compare overnight bases, and plan routes from Lhasa toward Sichuan or Yunnan.

A Chamdo map covers far more than Chamdo Town. This mountainous region of eastern Tibet includes Ranwu Lake, Laigu Glacier and the roads toward Sichuan and Yunnan. Ranwu, Baxoi, Chamdo Town and Markam serve different journeys. Allow two days around Ranwu and Laigu; a wider crossing needs several additional road days, before counting travel from Lhasa.

If the lake and glaciers brought you here, you may never need to visit Chamdo Town. If Jampaling Monastery is high on your list, the city deserves its own stop. Knowing that before you choose a hotel can save a substantial detour.

Chamdo Location Map: Is Your Destination the City or the Wider Region?

Chamdo lies east of Nyingchi, in the Hengduan mountain region. Chamdo Town sits where the rivers forming the upper Lancang, known downstream as the Mekong, meet. The wider administrative area stretches across mountain ranges and deep river valleys.

For a first look at a chamdo tourist map, follow G318 east from Nyingchi through Bomi to Ranwu. Beyond Ranwu, the road continues through Baxoi and Bangda toward Zogang and Markam. At Bangda, the road north leads toward Chamdo Town. At Markam, the routes divide toward Sichuan and south toward Yunnan.

That gives you a useful starting point: a lake-and-glacier visit, a city visit and an onward overland journey involve different roads. They are not day trips from one central hotel.

Ranwu Lake and Laigu Glacier

Ranwu Lake sits beside the G318 approach from Bomi. Laigu lies off the main highway, farther into the lake-and-glacier landscape. These are the most natural pair for a visit arriving from Nyingchi.

An overnight around Ranwu gives you time for the lake and a separate glacier visit without immediately retracing the road to Bomi. Allowing two days here means you can arrive, settle in and see the lake, then devote the following day to Laigu and the next transfer.

Laigu is a group of glaciers rather than one roadside viewpoint. A visit may involve local transfers and walking beyond the vehicle drop-off. The glacier named in your itinerary, the permitted viewing area and the season all affect the experience. Winter blue-ice photographs are not a promise of year-round conditions, and access to ice surfaces must follow the site’s safety arrangements.

Baxoi and the Nujiang Road

Baxoi, also written Basu, is the county containing Ranwu and Laigu. Its county town, Baima, lies farther along G318 and serves as a separate overnight stop.

Continuing toward Bangda brings you into the Nujiang mountain-road section, associated with the famous switchbacks. The drive is part of the attraction, but it also takes time. A short distance on a regional map can involve climbing away from a valley, crossing high ground and descending again.

Baxoi works particularly well as a break in an onward journey. There is less reason to add its town to a short lake-focused visit if you will return west afterward.

Chamdo Town and Jampaling Monastery

Jampaling Monastery is the principal cultural stop in Chamdo Town. It offers a different emphasis from the lake country: a major Gelug monastery within a living regional city.

To include it from the southern G318 corridor, you turn north at Bangda. Allow a city visit with its own overnight arrangements rather than trying to fit the monastery between two long highway transfers. A full day in town, separate from arrival and departure, leaves more room for the monastery and an unhurried look around the center.

Markam and the Yanjing Salt Fields

Markam, also written Mangkang, is the junction for the Sichuan and Yunnan approaches. Yanjing’s salt fields lie south of the county town along the Lancang valley, about 107 km away in the local tourism description.

Here the attraction is the salt-making landscape and its working terraces. It fits naturally into a journey continuing toward Deqin in Yunnan. On a Sichuan-bound journey, the visit adds a southward excursion before returning toward Markam. That extra driving belongs in the plan from the beginning.

Chamdo Travel Route Map: Return to Lhasa or Continue East?

A lake-and-glacier journey from Lhasa

The approach runs Lhasa → Nyingchi → Bomi → Ranwu, with Laigu reached from the Ranwu area. For a return trip, much of the eastern road is travelled twice. That is reasonable when the lake and glacier are the purpose of the journey; pushing on to Markam simply to make a longer route adds considerable driving.

CHIBET lists an eight-day winter blue-ice small-group tour featuring Laigu. It is a specific seasonal product, not a tour of every part of Chamdo. Its departure availability, glacier arrangements and overnight sequence need confirmation for your dates.

Adding the city or travelling onward

For Jampaling, the Bangda–Chamdo branch becomes a planned part of the journey. An onward flight might reduce backtracking if the flight, transfer and approved itinerary align. Bangda Airport is well outside the city and is a separate location from Bangda town. The airport transfer distance below does not measure the drive from the G318 junction.

For an eastbound crossing, G318 continues from Markam toward Batang in Sichuan. G214 heads south through the Yanjing area toward Deqin in Yunnan. Choosing the exit first helps determine which stops belong in the trip and which would send you back along the same road.

The following chamdo travel route map distances are rounded planning references. Times are allowances for normal driving conditions, excluding sightseeing, meals, checkpoints and delays. They are not live navigation estimates.

Start End Road distance Driving allowance Overnight base
Lhasa Nyingchi/Bayi About 400 km 5–6 hours Bayi
Bayi Bomi About 230–240 km 4–5 hours Bomi
Bomi Ranwu town About 130 km 2.5–3.5 hours Ranwu
Ranwu town Baxoi/Baima town About 90 km 2–3 hours Baxoi
Baxoi Markam via Bangda and Zogang About 360 km 8–10 hours Markam; consider splitting at Zogang
Bangda Airport Chamdo Town About 120–130 km 2–3 hours Chamdo Town
Markam town Yanjing area About 107 km 2.5–3.5 hours Yanjing area or next agreed stop

The Baxoi–Markam leg is the one to examine closely. Adding lengthy visits to an already long mountain-road day leaves little margin. Splitting the journey can be more useful than trying to reach another attraction before dark.

International visitors require an arranged Tibet tour and permits; the licensed operating agency must confirm the specific eastern route before bookings are finalized.

Last checked: 21 October 2026 — published route references and tour information. This does not confirm live road conditions. Rain, snow, works and traffic controls can change the day’s plan.

Where to Stay Along the Way: Chamdo Hotel and Restaurant Map

Your next morning matters more than the size of the town. A hotel near the lake helps with a Laigu visit; a city-center hotel helps with Jampaling. Neither is a convenient base for all of Chamdo.

Base Best fit Accommodation and meals
Ranwu Lake and Laigu visits Choose between town access and a more isolated lakeside setting; settle dinner arrangements before arrival
Baxoi/Baima Breaking the G318 journey Town services are useful for a meal, supplies and an early road departure
Chamdo Town Jampaling and a city stay Central accommodation gives more restaurant and shopping choices within a compact area
Markam Continuing toward Sichuan or Yunnan A practical place to organize food and the next transfer; salt fields are a separate drive

On a chamdo hotel map, a lakeside pin can look close to town while still requiring a vehicle for dinner. Before choosing that setting, establish whether the hotel serves evening meals and whether your group’s vehicle will remain available.

In the smaller stops, the useful questions are straightforward: Is the room heated? Is there reliable hot water? Can breakfast be ready before departure? A beautiful view does not answer those questions, especially in colder months.

The most useful points on a chamdo restaurant map are the towns where you can reliably build a meal into the schedule. Chamdo Town offers the broadest urban choice among these bases. In Ranwu, Baxoi and Markam, arrange the lunch stop with your guide before a long transfer rather than expecting a restaurant at each viewpoint.

Keep drinking water and a small amount of food in the vehicle. This is especially helpful when a road delay pushes lunch later. Dietary requirements are easier to accommodate when shared before the trip, while the agency is choosing hotels and meal stops.

Chamdo Altitude Map: How High Will You Sleep?

The greener valleys can make altitude easy to underestimate. Baxoi town is lower than Ranwu Lake, yet the road onward toward Bangda climbs above both. Your sleeping elevation and the highest point crossed during the day answer different questions.

Important place Approximate elevation What the number describes
Chamdo Town Around 3,250 m Urban reference elevation; hillside sites and hotels vary
Baxoi/Baima town 3,260 m County-town overnight base
Ranwu Lake 3,850 m Lake surface; nearby accommodation varies
Laigu glacier viewing area Around 4,000 m and above Viewing locations vary; not the glacier summits
Markam town 3,870 m County-town base
Yanjing salt fields Around 2,300 m River terraces, not every hotel in the wider area
Bangda Airport Around 4,333 m Arrival point, not Chamdo Town
Yela Pass Around 4,650 m High point on the traditional mountain-road section

Chamdo Altitude Map

These are rounded orientation figures. A single elevation for the whole region would hide the differences that matter to a traveller.

Flying into Bangda means arriving above 4,300 m before the transfer toward the city. Coming overland also requires an altitude-aware plan; scenery and paved roads do not remove the risk. Discuss your health and ascent plan with a clinician before travel.

Conclusion

Start with the part of Chamdo you most want to experience. Ranwu and Laigu make a natural pair; Jampaling needs a city stop; Yanjing fits the Yunnan direction. Share your starting point, next destination and available days with CHIBET so we can help discuss a workable plan with a licensed operating partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chamdo Map FAQs

Is Qamdo the same place as Chamdo?

Yes. Qamdo, Chamdo and Changdu are different renderings of the same place name. Search results may refer to either the city center or the wider region, so check the actual hotel or attraction address before comparing distances.

Is Bomi part of Chamdo or Nyingchi?

Bomi belongs to Nyingchi. It appears on Chamdo travel maps because it is an important approach and overnight stop west of Ranwu. A trip can visit both regions without visiting Chamdo Town.

Can I join a Tibet group tour halfway through in Chamdo?

Do not assume a group passing through can accept an extra passenger. Joining depends on the operator’s itinerary, permits, capacity and transfer arrangements. It must be agreed before you travel, not arranged by meeting a vehicle on the highway.

Will an offline map be enough for the mountain roads?

It helps you follow the journey when mobile reception is weak, but it cannot confirm today’s road controls or site access. Save hotel names in Chinese as well as English, and keep your guide’s contact details available offline. Your arranged transport and current local updates remain essential.
