Shigatse Tourist Map: Top Attractions and Travel Routes

Shigatse tourist map with Tashilhunpo, Gyantse, Sakya and Everest route groups. Compare driving days, overnight bases and connections with Lhasa.

Use this Shigatse tourist map to begin with Tashilhunpo Monastery and the old town, then choose an extension that fits your next destination. Gyantse combines well with the scenic Lhasa approach. Sakya adds a separate monastery visit off the westbound road. Everest needs a multi-day plan with a different overnight base, rather than another stop on a city sightseeing day.

Arriving through Gyantse already covers part of the eastern route. Coming directly from Lhasa leaves Gyantse as a choice for later, so check the arrival road before adding another excursion.

Start in Shigatse: Tashilhunpo and the old town

Tashilhunpo is the main visit to protect when choosing the best places in Shigatse for a first trip. The Shigatse map places the monastery below the hills on the western side of the urban center. Its courtyards and halls need time on foot, even when the drive from your hotel is short.

Allow a half-day block for arrival, entry and an unhurried visit, adjusted to the halls open that day.

Follow the monastery with the nearby old-town streets, leaving room for lunch or a rest. Any fortress interior or hill climb shown on a map needs separate access confirmation.

A full day in Shigatse is enough for the core city group without changing hotels. If you arrive early enough, the visits can instead be spread between the arrival afternoon and the following morning. Confirm Tashilhunpo access first, especially if your onward journey starts early.

Shigatse attractions map: three directions beyond the city

East toward Gyantse

Gyantse lies east-southeast of Shigatse along the Nyang Chu valley. Its principal cultural visit is the Pelkor Chode complex and Kumbum. The town makes sense either as a separate excursion or as a stop on the scenic road between Lhasa and Shigatse.Official Gyantse geographical reference

From Shigatse, allow a full day for a return visit. The roughly 90 km each way is only part of the schedule; the monastery complex, lunch and time in town need their own space. Stay in Shigatse if you are returning west afterward, or consider Gyantse if you will continue toward Yamdrok and Lhasa.

Southwest toward Sakya

Sakya is a different direction, south of the main westbound corridor. Its monastery and town deserve a deliberate visit. The direct road distance from Shigatse is around 150 km, so a return excursion involves substantial driving before the visit itself.2025 official Sakya distance reference

Sakya can also be included while travelling toward or back from the Everest region. It still requires a branch off the main road. Putting the name between Shigatse and Everest in an itinerary does not make the visit free of additional time.

West toward the Everest region

The westbound journey follows the Lhatse direction toward Tingri before turning into the Everest approach, with mountain-road stages and checks along the way.

Use a specific town name when discussing an overnight. Shelkar/Shegar and Baiba refer to the county-seat area commonly called New Tingri, while Old Tingri is a different settlement farther along the highway. The choice changes the next transfer.

Two or three days in Shigatse: how far should you go?

Two days, with a return to Lhasa

If both days begin in Shigatse, give one to Tashilhunpo and the old town. Use the other for the direction that best matches your return. Gyantse works particularly well if you will continue from there toward Yamdrok and Lhasa with enough time for the longer scenic transfer.

For a fixed return time in Lhasa, settle the transfer before adding visits. A direct drive leaves different sightseeing possibilities from the longer scenic return through Gyantse.

When the two days start in Lhasa, part of that time is already committed to reaching Shigatse. A train or direct vehicle arrival may leave time for a city visit; a scenic drive through Yamdrok and Gyantse often uses most of the day. Count the arrival leg before selecting another excursion.

Three days, with culture as the priority

From Shigatse, a city day plus separate days for Gyantse and Sakya can work if you accept the return drives and have already accounted for travel from Lhasa. For less time in the vehicle, choose one extension and give it longer, then place the other on a future journey.

Choose Gyantse for the valley town and Kumbum complex, or Sakya for its different monastery tradition.

Continuing to Everest

Keep the westbound travel days available. Gyantse is usually easier to include before arriving at Shigatse from Lhasa, while Sakya can be considered on one of the western stages. Trying to fit both into the outward Everest day can turn it into an exhausting schedule.

On a fixed-departure trip, the sequence is already tied to the group’s bookings and transport. Use this Shigatse itinerary map to compare programs before booking; changes need the operator’s agreement.

Shigatse travel route map: put Gyantse and Sakya in the right order

For a scenic journey from Lhasa, the broad sequence on a Tibet map is Yamdrok, Gyantse and then Shigatse. The Yamdrok Lake map helps explain this westbound sequence: after the lake and Gyantse, continuing to Shigatse avoids a separate return east solely for Gyantse. The day is long, so the exact visits must fit the departure time and road conditions.

After the city stay, continue west if Everest is the next destination. Sakya can be placed on the outward or return leg, provided the day has enough margin for the detour and visit. It is often easier to assess once the Everest overnight and return route have been fixed.

A direct Lhasa arrival allows a scenic return through Gyantse and Yamdrok, provided you leave more time than for the direct road.

On the Everest return, repeating some road may save time compared with a much longer loop. Place an additional visit where the schedule has room for it.

Toward Everest: where does a day trip become a multi-day journey?

From central Shigatse to the Everest visitor area, published routes commonly cover roughly 340–370 km. Allow about 7–8 hours as an indicative one-way travel block, with a precise breakdown confirmed by the agency. Lunch, checks, viewpoint stops and shuttle arrangements can lengthen the day.

That scale rules out treating Everest as a casual return outing from a Shigatse hotel. At least two travel days are needed for an outward-and-return visit from Shigatse, and a suitable altitude plan may require longer. Those days are additional to sightseeing in Lhasa and the adjustment time needed before travelling higher.

The Tibet Everest Base Camp map distinguishes the northern viewing and visitor areas from the mountaineering expedition camp. It is distinct from access to a mountaineering expedition camp. Official 2025 reporting places the eco-shuttle transfer center at Zhaxizong; the transfer forms part of the journey rather than a short connection you can ignore.Official Everest eco-shuttle report

The Tibet altitude map is useful when comparing nights in the wider Tingri area, Zhaxizong and the Rongbuk/visitor-camp area, because each choice changes both the daily stages and sleeping elevation. Staying closest to the mountain can offer convenient viewing, but convenience alone does not make it the right overnight choice. Discuss the ascent and sleeping plan before deciding.

Snow can interrupt access even during a popular travel period. An official notice reported reopening on 26 September 2026 after snow clearance, with icy sections still present. This is evidence of the need for travel-date checks, not a guarantee of conditions on a later departure.Official September 2026 reopening notice

Driving time and overnight map: where should each day end?

The route groups below are planning recommendations. Local drive ranges assume ordinary conditions and exclude visits and meals. The Everest range is a broader indicative transfer block; ask how checks, shuttles and stops are counted in the quoted schedule.

Attractions or route Direction Transport allowance Suitable time Overnight base
Tashilhunpo and old town Within the city Short local transfer, then walking 1 full day, or split across arrival and next morning Shigatse
Gyantse return excursion East-southeast About 1.5–2 hours each way 1 full day including visits Shigatse
Sakya return excursion Southwest About 2.5–3 hours each way 1 full day including visits Shigatse
Lhasa–Yamdrok–Gyantse–Shigatse Scenic southwest approach Around 6–8 hours driving, plus visits 1 long transfer day; more time gives fuller visits Shigatse, or Gyantse if split
Shigatse–Shelkar/Baiba area West Roughly 4–5 hours before extended stops 1 travel day if combined with agreed visits Named Tingri-area town
Shigatse–Everest visitor area West, then south into the mountains Roughly 7–8 hours one way; confirm shuttle and stop allowance At least 2 travel days for a return, subject to altitude plan Tingri area, Zhaxizong or approved mountain-area base

Sakya’s roughly 150 km figure is the direct approach from Shigatse; totals continuing to another town measure a different journey. The Everest distance refers to the visitor area beyond the scenic-area gate.

Keep the Shigatse base for city visits and return excursions. Move when it helps the next road stage or provides an appropriate overnight stop.

Last checked: 25 October 2026. Published route distances, official Everest transfer information and the September reopening notice were reviewed. Temple access, road controls, shuttle operations and visitor permissions need confirmation for the departure date. International visitors require an arranged Tibet journey with the relevant documents handled through the licensed operating agency.

Conclusion

Give Tashilhunpo and the old town time first, then let your onward direction guide the extensions. Gyantse fits the scenic Lhasa connection, Sakya needs an allocated detour, and Everest needs a separate travel and altitude plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shigatse tourist map FAQs

Can I arrive by train and visit Tashilhunpo the same day?

Potentially, if the confirmed train, station pickup and that day’s temple access leave enough time. An early arrival gives more flexibility. Do not rely on a late afternoon arrival without checking the entrance cutoff and the time needed to reach the site.

Can I leave my main luggage in Shigatse while visiting Everest?

Ask the agency and hotel to agree storage in advance, especially if you return to the same property. Keep your passport, required travel documents, medication and warm clothing with you. Storage should be confirmed rather than assumed from the itinerary.

Can a group tour add Sakya if it is not in the published itinerary?

Only with the operator’s prior agreement. The extra road and visit affect the group’s schedule and arrangements. If Sakya is a priority, choose a program that includes it or discuss a suitable private plan before booking.

Does an Everest itinerary include a walk to the climbing base camp?

A normal sightseeing itinerary provides access to designated tourist areas, subject to current rules. It does not grant access to an expedition camp or a route beyond the permitted visitor area. Ask which viewpoint, shuttle endpoint and walking section are actually included.
