13 Days Chengdu to Tibet Train Tour: Lhasa, Nyingchi, Yamdrok, Everest, Namtso

Arrive in Chengdu and check in near Tianfu International Airport. The first day is deliberately uncomplicated, with no sightseeing to fit around an international arrival.

Keep your passport and Tibet Travel Permit with your hand luggage tonight. Tomorrow combines a domestic flight with the train connection in Xining, so having the documents easy to reach will save time during the transfer.

Fly from Chengdu to Xining in the morning. The supplier currently uses a morning service as the reference, although the final flight number and timing depend on the ticket issued for your departure.

After arrival, transfer to the railway station and board the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. A soft-sleeper berth is arranged for the group. The first evening on board is less about sightseeing than settling into the compartment and watching the landscape grow wider as the train begins its climb toward Tibet.

Train numbers and departure times depend on ticket availability. Keep basic toiletries, medication, snacks and valuables in a smaller bag that is easy to reach in the sleeper compartment.

The train reaches Lhasa after crossing the high plateau. Your Tibetan guide meets the group at the railway station and transfers everyone to the hotel along the Lhasa River valley.

Nothing else is scheduled. The gradual rail ascent helps with the transition, but 3,650 meters is still high enough to make the first afternoon feel slower than expected. Check in, drink water and leave the exploring for tomorrow.

Taking the train does not guarantee that altitude symptoms will be avoided. If you develop a persistent headache, dizziness or unusual fatigue, rest and tell your guide.

Begin at the Potala Palace. The stairways come first, so the group takes the climb steadily before moving through chapels, former living quarters, murals and memorial stupas. Seen from inside, the palace tells a much more layered story than its familiar exterior alone.

After the palace visit, pause for the included coffee experience before heading into the old city. At Jokhang Temple, pilgrims continue to arrive throughout the day, and the traditional kora leads naturally onto Barkhor Street, where worship, shopping and ordinary city life share the same narrow lanes.

Authentic Tibetan Cultural Experiences:

Spend a little time in a local teahouse over Tibetan sweet tea. It is a quieter, more everyday counterpoint to the major monuments and a chance to sit among local customers rather than moving straight to the next sight.

A Tibetan dress photoshoot is also arranged around the old quarter. Traditional clothing, styling and makeup are prepared before the photographer uses selected streets and Tibetan-style backdrops around the historic center.

In the evening, the group sits down for a Tibetan welcome dinner. By this point everyone has already shared a train journey into Tibet, so the meal feels less like a formal welcome and more like the beginning of the road-trip section together.

Leave Lhasa and follow the river valleys east. The shift happens gradually: dry slopes soften, forest becomes more noticeable and villages sit closer to the road as the route moves toward lower Nyingchi.

The main stop is Basomtso Lake, surrounded by forest and snow mountains. Walk toward the small island area and look back across the water; compared with Yamdrok and Namtso later in the trip, this lake feels more sheltered and intimate.

Continue through the Niyang River valley to Nyingchi and check in for the night. This lower-altitude section gives the journey a different pace before tomorrow’s mountain and forest day.

Drive toward Lulang in the morning, climbing through the Sejila mountain area. The road gains height quickly, opening views over forested valleys that look very different from the bare plateau around Lhasa.

When the weather is clear, the pass area gives one of the best chances to see Mount Namcha Barwa. The 7,782-meter peak is famous for hiding behind cloud, so the mountain often dictates the timing more than the group does.

Continue into Lulang Forest, where spruce-covered slopes, pasture and grazing animals fill the valley below the snow peaks. Return to Nyingchi later in the day and finish with the included Nyingchi Stone Pot Chicken, served hot after the mountain drive.

A clear view of Mount Namcha Barwa is never guaranteed. Cloud can form quickly around the summit even when the valley below is bright.

Before leaving the Nyingchi region, stop at Kadinggou Waterfall. The short visit takes you into a narrow forested gorge where the waterfall drops down a high cliff and natural rock forms have long been associated with Buddhist imagery.

Then the group turns west. Forest thins as the road climbs, the valleys broaden and the familiar high-plateau colors return. Reach Lhasa later in the day and settle back into the city before the route heads toward Shigatse tomorrow.

The road climbs from Lhasa toward Gampala Pass, where Yamdrok Lake appears far below in long turquoise curves. The viewpoint gives the big picture first; later, the road descends closer to the water and the lake stretches out beside villages and grazing land.

Continue west to Karola Glacier, where the ice descends unusually close to the highway. The visit is brief compared with a glacier trek, but the scale is immediate because there is no long approach between the road and the ice.

In the Gyantse area, visit Kumbum Monastery before continuing across the Nyangchu Valley to Shigatse. By evening, the scenery has shifted again from sacred lake and glacier to one of Tibet’s most important historic cities.

The high passes and glacier area can be colder and windier than Lhasa even on a clear day. Keep a warm layer within reach rather than packed in the luggage.

Leave Shigatse and follow the Friendship Highway toward Tingri. The farther west the group travels, the emptier the plateau becomes and the more the Himalayan skyline begins to take over.

On a clear day, several 8,000-meter peaks can appear along the route, including Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Makalu. Continue into the Mount Everest reserve and toward Rongbuk Monastery before reaching the Everest viewing area.

There is time around Everest Base Camp before checking in near the mountain. Dinner is a Tibetan Yak Hotpot: straightforward, warming food that suits the cold and altitude after a full day on the road.

Unlike the more basic tent accommodation used on some routes, this deluxe product includes Rongbuk Hotel or a similar oxygen-supply stay in the Everest area.

Everest visibility, sunset and stars are weather-dependent. The oxygen-equipped hotel adds comfort, but the altitude still requires slow movement, warm clothing and plenty of rest.

Wake early for a possible sunrise over Mount Everest. When the sky is clear, the upper slopes catch the first light before the valley brightens; if cloud moves in, the mountain can disappear just as quickly.

There may be another opportunity to approach Everest Base Camp by local eco-bus. Travelers who want more walking can choose the route from Rongbuk Monastery toward the base camp area, which the supplier describes as roughly 1.5 to 2 hours one way. At this altitude, it is considerably harder than the distance suggests.

Later, rejoin the Friendship Highway through Tingri and continue east to Shigatse for a second night.

The optional walk is not required to experience Everest. If you feel tired, short of breath or simply want to conserve energy, take the eco-bus instead.

Before leaving Shigatse, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Its courtyards, assembly halls and memorial stupas are still part of an active monastic complex rather than a preserved historic shell.

One of the major sights inside is the towering gilded Maitreya image. After the monastery visit, follow the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley east toward Lhasa. Compared with the high passes around Everest, the return is lower and easier on the body.

The final sightseeing day heads north across a much more open landscape than Nyingchi. The road crosses the Northern Tibet Grasslands, with yak herds, long valleys and the Nyenchen Tanglha range appearing along the way.

After climbing over Nagenla Pass, descend toward Namtso Lake at about 4,718 meters. From the shore, the water seems to run straight into the distant snow mountains; there is far less shelter here than at Basomtso, and the wind makes the altitude feel even more exposed.

Spend time by the lakeside, then make the long drive back to Lhasa for the final night.

CHIBET Travel Advice:
Namtso is much higher and usually colder than Lhasa. Bring a warm outer layer, hat and gloves, and keep your pace slow near the water.
