Where Is Chamdo? Location Map from World to Tibet

Where is Chamdo? Locate eastern Tibet beside Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai, and follow the roads linking Lhasa, Nyingchi, Baxoi and Markam.

Chamdo lies in eastern Tibet, China, in the Hengduan mountain region adjoining Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai. Its urban center is on the upper Lancang River, east of Lhasa. Markam connects the southern Sichuan and Yunnan approaches, while Baxoi links the G318 corridor toward Nyingchi. Reaching Chamdo Town from Lhasa involves a long road journey or a flight followed by an airport transfer.

Where Is Chamdo? Eastern Tibet’s Connection with Sichuan and Yunnan

From Sichuan, the road enters Tibet from the east. From Yunnan, it approaches from the southeast. Chamdo occupies the Tibetan side of these connections, where mountain roads cross between the valleys of the Jinsha, Lancang and Nu rivers.Chamdo government geographical overview

For a traveller looking west from Chengdu or north from Yunnan, this makes Chamdo an early part of an overland journey into Tibet. Travelling east from Lhasa, you approach it from the other direction, either across northern Tibet or through Nyingchi and the southern mountain corridor.

The urban center is one destination within this wider area. A journey through Markam, Baxoi and Ranwu can pass through Chamdo’s southern counties while staying well away from the city itself. The road you follow determines whether the urban center is part of the journey.

Locating the principal junctions first makes the region easier to understand. Markam joins the southern Sichuan and Yunnan directions. Bangda connects that southern corridor with the road north toward Chamdo Town. The northern route through the city follows a different course across Tibet.

Chamdo on the World and China Map

In Asia, Chamdo lies near the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, where the land is cut by deep river valleys. The Hengduan ranges extend through this transition between the plateau and southwestern China. Ridges and rivers explain much of the road pattern: routes follow valleys for a time, then climb across high ground into the next one.

Several rivers familiar farther downstream have their upper courses here. The Lancang becomes the Mekong; the Jinsha is part of the upper Yangtze system. For a first look at Chamdo’s position, these river lines help connect inland Tibet with the geography of China and Southeast Asia.

The urban center sits where the Za Qu and Ngom Qu meet to form the Lancang. Its valley setting places it within a much larger mountain region, with roads approaching from several directions.

To find Chamdo on a China map, locate Tibet in the country’s southwest, then move to its eastern side beside western Sichuan. Yunnan meets the southeastern part of the region, and Qinghai its northern side. These are provincial relationships across a large area, rather than three short drives from the city center.

On a Tibet map, Lhasa lies west of Chamdo. Nyingchi provides the southwestern connection along the southern road corridor; Nagqu provides the northwestern connection toward G317. A map showing both approaches is more informative than a single line between the two cities.

Chamdo Regional Map: Follow the Roads through Markam, Baxoi and Bangda

From Sichuan to Markam

On the southern Sichuan–Tibet route, G318 approaches from the Batang direction and crosses into Tibet before reaching Markam, also written Mangkang. From Markam, the westbound road continues through Zogang toward Bangda and Baxoi.

This southern route is one familiar way into Chamdo, especially for journeys continuing toward Nyingchi and Lhasa. Sichuan also has a northern approach: G317 comes through the Dege–Jomda direction toward Chamdo Town. The two roads cross different parts of the region, so a proposal described simply as a Sichuan–Tibet journey needs its actual route identified.

From Yunnan to the same southern junction

The G214 approach from Yunnan travels north from the Deqin direction through the Yanjing area toward Markam. This is where a Yunnan journey meets the southern east–west corridor.

After reaching Markam, the next turn matters. Continuing west leads toward Zogang, Bangda and Baxoi; continuing toward the urban center involves further road connections to the north. Markam is therefore useful for understanding a route’s direction even if your visit begins far away in Lijiang or Shangri-La.

Yanjing lies south of Markam town along the Lancang valley. Its position helps locate the Yunnan approach, rather than placing it beside the county-town junction itself.

Through Baxoi toward Nyingchi, or north toward the city

Baxoi, also called Basu, lies on G318 west of Bangda. Farther west are Ranwu and then Bomi, which belongs to Nyingchi. Following the road onward through the Nyingchi region brings you toward Lhasa.

For Chamdo Town, the Bangda junction is the reference to recognize. The road north follows the G214 connection toward the city, leaving the G318 corridor. A visit to the city needs to be included deliberately when travelling this southern route.

Bangda Airport is another point on the map, separate from Bangda town. Both names appear in transport descriptions, but an airport transfer distance cannot be substituted for the drive from the highway junction. This becomes particularly relevant if you arrive by air and continue toward Baxoi or Markam instead of the city.

How Far Is Chamdo from Lhasa? Compare the Main Road Approaches

For Chamdo Town, the principal overland approaches from Lhasa cover roughly 1,000 km or more. The northern route reaches the city through the Nagqu–G317 direction. The southern route runs through Nyingchi, Bomi, Ranwu and Baxoi, then turns north near Bangda.

Published route descriptions give approximately 1,040–1,100 km for the northern approach and around 1,100–1,200 km for the southern approach. These are broad orientation ranges from different road references, not current navigation measurements. They establish the scale of the journey without implying that every proposal uses the same roads.Northern route reference

Connection Approximate road distance Route reference Time implication
Lhasa–Chamdo Town, northern approach Around 1,040–1,100 km Nagqu connection and G317 A multi-day road journey; confirm the selected overnight sequence
Lhasa–Chamdo Town, southern approach Around 1,100–1,200 km Nyingchi, G318 and G214 via Bangda Several driving stages, with additional time for visits
Bangda Airport–Chamdo Town Around 120–130 km Airport to urban destination Allow roughly 2–3 hours as a planning range
Ranwu–Baxoi town Around 90 km G318 Allow roughly 2–3 hours, excluding stops
Markam town–Yanjing area About 107 km G214 toward Yunnan Allow roughly 2.5–3.5 hours, excluding visits

The Lhasa ranges apply to the urban center. Reaching the wider Chamdo region, for example at Ranwu from Nyingchi, is a different endpoint. A trip can enter the region long before it arrives in the city.

Road upgrades and the precise urban start point affect distances, while weather and traffic controls affect time. The local driving ranges above are planning allowances, excluding visits, meals and delays. Confirm the route with the operating agency before using any figure to book an onward connection.

The northern approach may be shorter for the city, while the southern one includes places a traveller specifically wants to visit. A useful comparison starts with those places and the intended finish, then considers the driving required. Neither route should be reduced to a one-day transfer based on a map estimate.

How to Get to Chamdo from Lhasa, Sichuan or Yunnan

Choosing an overland direction

From Lhasa, decide whether your purpose is to reach the city or travel through the southern counties. G317 is relevant to a northern journey toward the city. The Nyingchi approach makes sense when the southern valleys and road corridor are part of the trip.

From Sichuan, the choice between the northern and southern roads similarly changes which part of Chamdo you reach first. A Chengdu departure alone does not tell you whether the itinerary includes Chamdo Town. Look for the named towns and roads before comparing distances or trip lengths.

From Yunnan, the Deqin–Yanjing–Markam direction provides the main reference for the established G214 approach. It joins the southern road network, from which the journey can continue west. Other lines visible on a regional map should not be assumed to offer equivalent visitor access.

Arriving at Bangda Airport

Chamdo Bangda Airport, also written Qamdo Bamda Airport, is outside the city. Official descriptions place it about 126 km from the urban center. Your flight arrival therefore needs a substantial road transfer, whether you are going to town or another part of the region.Official airport distance reference

The airport is around 4,330 m above sea level. For someone arriving from lower ground, the elevation is part of the arrival plan. An onward drive toward a lower valley does not remove the need to consider the altitude at landing and any higher sections crossed afterward.

Flight schedules should be checked against the particular journey rather than assumed from an older route list. A flight to Bangda can shorten the approach, but its usefulness depends on where the driver will take you next and how that fits the approved itinerary.

International visitors require an arranged Tibet journey and the necessary permissions. The licensed operating agency should confirm the named overland route, entry arrangements and airport pickup before bookings are finalized. A fixed-departure program also determines which branches of this road network the group actually follows.

Conclusion

Chamdo occupies Tibet’s eastern approaches from Sichuan and Yunnan, with a separate northern road through its urban center. Locate Markam, Baxoi and Bangda against the places you want to reach, then choose the approach. Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs About Chamdo’s Location

Are Chamdo, Qamdo and Changdu the same place?

Yes. These are different renderings of the same name. Transport listings may use Qamdo for the airport and Changdu in Chinese pinyin. Match the airport code BPX or the Chinese address supplied by your agency when checking a booking.

Is Chamdo part of Sichuan or Tibet?

Chamdo is within the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It adjoins western Sichuan, which is why it appears frequently in Sichuan–Tibet route descriptions. Crossing from one region to the other is part of an overland journey, not a change in where Chamdo itself is located.

Is Ranwu in Chamdo or Nyingchi?

Ranwu is in Baxoi County, Chamdo. Bomi, farther west along G318, belongs to Nyingchi. The continuous road through both regions explains why Ranwu is often included in travel discussions centered on Nyingchi.

Which name should I search for to locate central Chamdo?

Use Chamdo Town or Karuo District, followed by the specific address. For a flight, search Chamdo Bangda Airport or BPX separately. Saving the Chinese address alongside the English name helps when a map or booking system uses a different spelling.
