Where Is Shannan? Location Map from World to Tibet

Where is Shannan? Locate southern Tibet and see how Lhasa, Gonggar Airport, Tsetang, Samye and Yamdrok connect by valley roads and mountain passes.

Shannan lies in southern Tibet, China, south of Lhasa and north of the Himalayan borderlands adjoining Bhutan and India. Tsetang, its urban center, lies southeast of Lhasa in the Yarlung Valley. Samye is northwest of Tsetang across the Yarlung Tsangpo, while Yamdrok Lake lies farther west. Lhasa Gonggar Airport is also within Shannan, giving many visitors their first arrival point here.

Where Is Shannan? Start at Lhasa Gonggar Airport

When you land at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, you are already in Gonggar County, Shannan. The transfer to Lhasa takes you away from the airport toward the capital. Continuing toward Tsetang instead follows the Yarlung Tsangpo valley eastward into central Shannan.

This is a useful place to begin reading the map because the airport connects two travel directions. Your flight may be booked to Lhasa, while the ground beneath the runway belongs to the region you hope to explore later.

Tsetang is the main urban reference for that exploration. It sits near the Yarlung Valley’s meeting with the broader river corridor. Samye lies across the Yarlung Tsangpo and farther west, while Yamdrok requires a journey toward the western lake country. Arriving at Gonggar therefore gives you access to Shannan without putting every destination close to the terminal.

The airport road and the newer S5 connection from Lhasa approach this area differently. That explains why an older map or guide may give a much longer journey than a recent road report. The geography has stayed the same; the available road connections have changed.

Shannan on the World and Tibet Map

On a world map, Shannan is in the Asian interior, on the southern Tibetan Plateau. The Himalayas lie along its southern borderlands. Bhutan and India provide useful references beyond those mountains, while the main places discussed here lie farther north in Tibetan valleys and lake basins.

Mountains occupy much of the space between the valley towns and the southern frontier. An international boundary near the bottom of a regional map does not imply a convenient arrival route. For the central Shannan destinations, Lhasa and Gonggar Airport are the practical reference points to investigate first.

To locate Shannan on a China map, find the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China, then look south of Lhasa. Within Tibet, Shannan adjoins Shigatse to the west and Nyingchi to the east. Its northern side meets the Lhasa region; its southern extent reaches the Himalayan borderlands.Regional geographical overview

At a closer scale, two river names help explain the area. The Yarlung Tsangpo is the large east-flowing river along which the airport and central valley connections are arranged. The Yarlung Valley around Tsetang extends south from that corridor. The names are related in local geography, but they do not describe exactly the same stretch of ground.

This gives Shannan more depth than a narrow band below Lhasa. It includes the central river towns, the western Yamdrok area and mountain country farther south. A visit to one part can be quite contained; travelling across the wider region takes substantially more road time.

Tsetang, Samye and Yamdrok: Which Direction Does Each Journey Take?

Tsetang and the Yarlung Valley

Tsetang sits southeast of Lhasa and east of Gonggar Airport. It is the town to locate when you want to understand central Shannan, especially the Yarlung Valley immediately to its south. Maps may use Tsedang or Zetang for the same town.

The valley gives the journey a clear local direction. Moving south from Tsetang takes you into the Yarlung Valley, while following the larger river corridor connects you with other towns to the east or west. You do not need to learn every county name to follow these movements.

Samye across the river

Samye lies northwest of Tsetang, on the northern side of the Yarlung Tsangpo. It is also the name to recognize near the southern end of the S5 road connection from the Lhasa side.

The river crossing and the selected approach road determine the drive. A line between two map pins can leave out the bridge access and the road along the bank. For a visit combining Tsetang and Samye, the actual transfer is more useful than judging their proximity across the river.

Samye can also be approached from Lhasa without first visiting Tsetang. This allows different orders of travel. The sequence should follow the route and your next destination, rather than an assumption that the urban center must always come first.

Yamdrok on the western side

Yamdrok Lake lies well west of Tsetang, in the Nangartse area of Shannan. From Lhasa, the familiar approach heads toward the Yarlung Tsangpo crossing near Qushui, then climbs toward the Gampa La viewpoint and the lake.

This is a different direction from continuing east along the valley toward Tsetang. A Yamdrok excursion can fit a journey toward Gyantse and Shigatse, while a Samye–Tsetang visit centers on the river corridor and Yarlung Valley. Combining them involves an additional connection, rather than a few nearby stops around one town.

The lake itself also needs a precise destination. Gampa La is a high viewpoint above the water; a lakeshore stop lies farther along the road. Reaching the first panorama and reaching a particular shore are different endpoints, even when both are described as a visit to Yamdrok.

How Far Is Shannan from Lhasa?

For Tsetang, older published descriptions commonly give approximately 150 km from Lhasa via the airport-side road network. That remains a useful reference for understanding the valley approach, but newer connections change the comparison.

S5 opened in December 2024, linking the Dagze side of Lhasa with the Samye area through the Guigal tunnel. Official reports describe a roughly 65 km reduction in the Lhasa–Shannan journey and travel of about an hour. The S5 project itself is approximately 47 km long; that is not the entire journey from a Lhasa hotel to Tsetang.Official S5 opening report

For a pickup, allow for urban access, the selected exit and the final destination. The figures below keep the older route and the newer link distinct rather than treating one number as a universal Shannan distance.

Road connection Distance reference Driving reference Endpoint or route note
Lhasa–Tsetang via the airport-side valley roads About 150 km Allow roughly 2.5–3 hours Traditional published approach; excludes visits
Lhasa–Shannan using the S5 connection Reported reduction of about 65 km against the earlier route Official opening reports quote about 1 hour Confirm the complete hotel-to-destination route; S5 alone is about 47 km
Gonggar Airport–Tsetang Around 90 km Around 1.5 hours Approximate central Tsetang destination
Tsetang–Samye Roughly 45–60 km About 1–1.5 hours Bridge, town address and approach affect the total
Lhasa–Yamdrok’s Gampa La/nearby lake approach Around 110–120 km About 2–3 hours Specify viewpoint versus lakeshore

The driving ranges are planning allowances for normal conditions, excluding sightseeing, meals and delays. Road distances are rounded references. A current route quotation should state which connection it uses, particularly for Lhasa, Samye and Tsetang.

For Yamdrok, the mountain climb takes time even though the distance from Lhasa is modest. For the central valley, a newer tunnel may shorten the drive considerably. Looking at the type of road helps explain the schedule better than comparing kilometers alone.

How to Get to Shannan from Lhasa or the Airport

Starting in Lhasa

From Lhasa, an arranged vehicle can use the connection suited to your first destination. The S5 direction is relevant to the Samye and central Shannan approach. The airport-side valley road is another connection, while the Yamdrok journey turns toward the western mountain-and-lake route.

If your next destination is Shigatse, the lake direction may form part of that onward journey. If you return to Lhasa after visiting Samye and Tsetang, the road choice can reduce unnecessary driving. These are route decisions to settle before choosing departure and return times.

Starting at Gonggar Airport

An airport arrival can continue directly toward Tsetang when that is part of the arranged program. It is worth comparing this with travelling into Lhasa and returning to the same valley later. Flight timing, the first overnight and the intended visits will determine whether the direct connection suits you.

A February 2026 official airport guide lists the airport–Shannan city bus journey at about 90 minutes. This supports the broad transfer scale, although your agency’s pickup may use a different stop or destination. A flight landing time also needs baggage collection and the meeting with your guide added before the drive starts.Official airport travel guide

Arriving by rail

The Lhasa–Nyingchi railway passes through Shannan. Shannan station is relevant for Tsetang, followed by a road pickup to the agreed address. It does not deliver you to Samye or Yamdrok directly.

For a train transfer, compare station access and onward driving with the vehicle route. A short rail journey can be convenient between urban areas; a day with visits along the way may work better with the vehicle already accompanying you.

International visitors need an arranged Tibet journey and the required permits. The licensed operating agency should confirm the station or airport pickup and the named destinations before transport is booked. A public transport timetable alone does not provide the arrangements for a regional visit.

Last checked: 25 October 2026. Published S5, airport and regional transport information was reviewed. Confirm current road controls, train services and pickup arrangements for your dates. Proximity to Bhutan or India is a geographical reference, not confirmation of a visitor border crossing.

Conclusion

Gonggar Airport gives you a useful first reference for Shannan: Tsetang lies east along the valley, Samye across the river to its northwest, and Yamdrok farther west beyond the mountain approach. Tell CHIBET where you arrive and where you want to continue so a licensed Tibet operating partner can help connect the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs About Shannan’s Location

Are Shannan and Lhoka the same place?

Yes. Shannan is the Mandarin pinyin name, while Lhoka is commonly used in Tibetan and English travel references. Both names describe the wider region. Transport and address searches are more precise when you add the town or station you need.

Is Tsetang the same as Shannan?

Tsetang is Shannan’s urban center, within Nedong District. Shannan covers a much larger area that also includes the Yamdrok region and other valleys. A booking labeled simply Shannan should therefore be checked for its actual address.

Does Shannan border Nepal?

Shannan’s southern borderlands adjoin Bhutan and India; Nepal lies farther west. Seeing Nepal on a broad Himalayan map does not place it immediately south of Tsetang. For an international approach, check the actual crossing and onward road rather than the nearest country label.

Which place should I search for in a map app for central Shannan?

Search Tsetang or Tsedang, then the specific address. For a railway arrival, use Shannan railway station. Save the Chinese name or address supplied by the agency as well, since English spellings can vary between booking systems and maps.
