Where Is Nyingchi? Location Map from World to Tibet

Where is Nyingchi? Locate southeastern Tibet, compare distances from Lhasa, and see how Bomi, Ranwu, Medog and Sichuan connect by road.

Nyingchi lies southeast of Lhasa, in southeastern Tibet, China, around the eastern Himalayas and the lower Yarlung Tsangpo. Its urban center, Bayi, is roughly 400 km from Lhasa by road. Bomi lies farther east along G318, followed by Ranwu in neighboring Chamdo. Medog lies south of the main eastbound highway, requiring a separate mountain-road approach.

Where Is Nyingchi? Look Southeast of Lhasa

From Lhasa, the road to Nyingchi heads east through the Nyang River valley toward Bayi. This is the reference point most useful for an arrival or hotel transfer. Beyond Bayi, G318 continues into the mountains toward Lulang and Bomi, eventually reaching Ranwu.

You can see the broad direction at a glance, but the route changes character along the way. The Lhasa approach uses the high-grade road, while the journey east of Bayi crosses mountain country. Reaching Nyingchi from Lhasa and continuing from Nyingchi to Bomi are different stages of travel.

Farther south, the Yarlung Tsangpo bends through the eastern Himalayas toward Medog. The river helps you understand the landscape, although its course does not provide a continuous visitor road. Medog needs its own approach and access checks.

Nyingchi on the World and China Map

On a world map, find the Tibetan Plateau in the interior of Asia, north of the Himalayas. Nyingchi is near the plateau’s southeastern edge, where high mountains descend into deep river valleys. This setting explains the contrast with the open plateau landscapes farther west in Tibet.

The Yarlung Tsangpo flows east through southern Tibet before making its great bend around the eastern Himalayan mountains and turning south. Much of Nyingchi’s geography becomes easier to follow once you locate this bend. The river and its tributaries connect the valleys, while mountain ridges separate places that appear close on a small map.

To locate Nyingchi on a China map, look within the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China. Within Tibet, Lhasa lies to its northwest, Shannan to the west, and Chamdo toward the northeast and east. Sichuan is farther east beyond the intervening eastern Tibet road sections.

For a traveller, Bayi is a useful central reference within this much wider region. The airport lies south of it, Bomi farther east, and Medog beyond the mountain divide to the south. Locating these points gives a better sense of the area than the position of the regional label alone.

Nyingchi Regional Map: East to Bomi and Ranwu, South toward Medog

Following G318 toward Bomi and Ranwu

From Bayi, G318 heads toward the Sejila mountain area and Lulang before continuing east to Bomi. The bends and changing elevation are part of this transfer. Around 230 km can occupy much of a morning or afternoon, so a modest distance does not necessarily mean a short ride.

Bomi is a separate town within Nyingchi, useful for understanding how far the journey has progressed east. From there, the road follows the valley toward Ranwu, roughly another 130 km away. Ranwu belongs to Chamdo, but it fits naturally into many journeys through eastern Nyingchi because the road continues directly toward it.

If you are arriving from Sichuan on the southern overland route, you approach from the opposite direction. The broad sequence is Markam, Baxoi, Ranwu, Bomi and then Bayi before continuing toward Lhasa. Several long road sections separate Sichuan from Nyingchi; the provincial name on a map should not suggest an immediate neighbor to Bayi.

This also helps with planning a return to Lhasa. Travelling as far as Bomi or Ranwu usually means returning along much of the same eastern corridor unless the trip has a separately arranged onward route. A return drive can be a reasonable part of the journey when those eastern places are your priority.

Turning toward Medog

Medog lies south of the main G318 corridor in the lower Yarlung Tsangpo region. The established Bomi approach crosses the mountains by the Bomi–Medog road. A 2024 Nyingchi tourism description gives this road as 117 km between the towns.Nyingchi tourism road description

Other roads, including the Pai–Medog connection, appear in infrastructure reports. A road’s construction or presence on a map does not establish routine tourist access. For travel planning, use the approach actually confirmed by the operating agency for your dates and passport.

Medog should therefore be considered separately from a straightforward continuation east to Ranwu. It involves another road, a different direction and its own access arrangements. The geography is clear; whether it belongs in a particular visitor’s trip needs confirmation before booking.

How Far Is Nyingchi from Lhasa and Nearby Towns?

Lhasa to Bayi is approximately 400 km by road, with a normal driving allowance of about five to six hours before sightseeing stops. Bayi is the endpoint used here whenever a distance refers to the Nyingchi urban center.

The road east to Bomi is shorter in kilometers but follows winding mountain sections. Beyond Bomi, Ranwu is closer again, although photo stops and weather can still extend the day. These differences matter more to your schedule than comparing kilometer totals alone.

Road section Approximate distance Driving allowance Route reference
Lhasa–Bayi About 400 km 5–6 hours Main high-grade road approach
Bayi–Bomi About 230–240 km 4–5 hours G318 through the Lulang direction
Bomi–Ranwu About 130 km 2.5–3.5 hours G318 eastbound
Bomi–Medog About 117 km Confirm for the travel date Separate mountain road; access and controls affect the plan

Distances are rounded town-to-town references. Driving allowances exclude visits, meals, checkpoints and delays. For Medog, a reliable departure-day estimate requires the confirmed road and current controls; the distance alone is insufficient.

If you have only a few days, begin with how far east you hope to travel and where the trip finishes. Returning to Lhasa requires time for the westbound journey. Continuing toward Sichuan changes both the scale and the arrangements, so it deserves a separate proposal rather than an extra stop added late.

How to Get to Nyingchi: Road, Train or Flight?

By road from Lhasa

The road is useful when you want stops between the two urban centers or will continue east with an arranged vehicle. It brings you toward Bayi without a station transfer, although sightseeing detours can add substantially to the day.

The journey from Lhasa also gives a gradual introduction to the valleys of southeastern Tibet. If your tour includes places away from the main road, check the actual day’s route when comparing its duration with a direct transfer.

By train from Lhasa

The Lhasa–Nyingchi railway follows a different alignment through Shannan and along the Yarlung Tsangpo. It is about 435 km long. A June 2026 official report gave the fastest Lhasa–Nyingchi journey as 3 hours 49 minutes; the train available on your date may take longer.June 2026 railway report

Arrival is at Nyingchi railway station, followed by a road transfer to Bayi or your next destination. Compare the whole journey, including station procedures and pickup, when weighing it against a direct drive. The railway is particularly relevant if you want to make this transfer without sightseeing along the highway.

Flying into Nyingchi Mainling Airport

Nyingchi Mainling Airport, also written Milin Airport, lies in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley south of Bayi. The city government’s airport description places it about 50 km from Bayi. Allow roughly an hour for the onward drive, depending on the destination and road conditions.City government airport description

A flight can make Nyingchi your first stop in Tibet when the service and approved arrangements fit. It also gives a different starting point from a Lhasa arrival: you are already near the southeastern valleys, with Bayi and the eastbound road ahead.

Flights and rail tickets need to match the arranged Tibet itinerary. International visitors require the relevant permits and an organized journey; access to Medog needs specific confirmation. A domestic route being available for sale does not settle the visitor’s full travel arrangements.

Last checked: 25 October 2026. Published road, airport and railway references were reviewed. Confirm train times, flights, road controls and Medog access for the travel date before finalizing connections.

Conclusion

Nyingchi is southeast of Lhasa, with Bayi as a useful arrival reference and G318 continuing east to Bomi and Ranwu. Medog branches south into a different mountain-road journey. Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs About Nyingchi’s Location

Are Nyingchi and Linzhi the same place?

Yes. Linzhi is the Mandarin pinyin spelling, while Nyingchi is commonly used in English travel writing. Both names refer to the same region. Transport booking systems may use either spelling, so the station or airport name is useful when checking a reservation.

Why does my hotel address say Bayi rather than Nyingchi?

Bayi identifies the urban center more precisely. Nyingchi also covers a much wider administrative area containing other towns and counties. A Bayi address helps distinguish an urban stay from accommodation farther east or elsewhere in the region.

Is Nyingchi closer to Chengdu or Lhasa?

By the usual road approaches, Bayi is much closer to Lhasa. Chengdu lies beyond the long Sichuan–Tibet overland corridor. A flight connection from Chengdu may still suit your trip, but air access and road proximity answer different questions.

Can I use a downloaded map to follow the route?

Yes. Save the towns, arrival point and agreed overnight stops before departure, along with your guide’s contact details. An offline map helps you follow progress where reception is weak. It cannot report a new road restriction or establish permission to enter a particular area.
