Nyingchi City Map: Administrative Center, Districts and Counties

Use this Nyingchi city map to locate Bayi, Mainling Airport, Bomi and the region's counties, with practical transfer and route guidance.

A Nyingchi city map can mean two very different things. On a hotel booking, “Nyingchi” usually means the urban area of Bayi. On an administrative map, it stretches east and south across mountains, river valleys and seven county-level divisions, including places that take most of a day to reach.

The quickest way to read the map is to remember three names. Bayi is the city base. Mainling is the airport gateway. Bomi is the eastbound road base. Once those are clear, the rest of the region becomes much easier to place.

Nyingchi City Location Map: Start with Bayi

Nyingchi lies in southeastern Tibet, along the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo and the valleys that lead toward eastern Tibet. The administrative center is in Bayi District, and Bayi's urban area is where most travelers find their hotel, guide, restaurants and everyday services. The Tibet regions map places it against the other six prefectures.

Bayi sits at roughly 2,900–3,000 meters. That is lower than Lhasa and Shigatse, but it is not low altitude. Routes toward Lulang and Bomi climb much higher—Sejila Pass is above 4,700 meters—so a green valley view does not remove the need for a sensible pace and attention to altitude symptoms.

This is what “downtown Nyingchi” normally means in a tour itinerary. It does not mean every destination administered by Nyingchi is close to the city. Bomi is about 230 km to the east. Medog and Zayü require separate route planning. Mainling Airport is in another county-level city.

On a Nyingchi city location map, use Bayi as the first reference point. Lhasa and Basum Tso lie to the west, Mainling and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon lie south or southwest, and Lulang and Bomi lead east along the G318 corridor.

Nyingchi Administrative Map: Seven Divisions, Three That Shape Most Trips

Nyingchi administers Bayi District, Mainling City, Gongbo'gyamda County, Nang County, Bomi County, Zayü County and Medog County. That is useful administrative information, but it is not a seven-stop sightseeing list.

For a first trip, three divisions usually do most of the practical work. Bayi provides the city stay. Mainling connects the airport and the Grand Canyon side of the region. Bomi breaks the long eastern road journey. Gongbo'gyamda also appears frequently because Basum Tso lies there, although travelers may stay near the lake rather than in the county seat.

Nang, Medog and Zayü belong to more specific routes. They should not be added simply because they share the Nyingchi name. Each changes the direction, number of days and access arrangements of the trip.

The current division list below follows the Tibet Autonomous Region civil-affairs codes published for the first half of 2026. English spellings vary across maps; the administrative relationships do not.

Administrative unit Administrative center Travel relevance Main transport entrance
Bayi District Bayi urban area Main city stay; access to Lulang and regional services G318, Nyingchi Railway Station, airport road
Mainling City Mainling Town Airport gateway; access toward the Grand Canyon and Pai Nyingchi Mainling Airport, G219 and regional roads
Gongbo'gyamda County Gongbo'gyamda Town Basum Tso and the usual approach from Lhasa G318 from Lhasa
Nang County Nang Town Southern Yarlung Tsangpo route; itinerary-specific G560 and valley roads
Bomi County Zhamu Town Eastern overnight and supply base; access toward Ranwu G318 from Bayi or Baxoi
Zayü County Zhuwagen Town Remote southeastern and border-area routes G219 and regional mountain roads
Medog County Medog Town Standalone subtropical and canyon journey G559 via Bomi under current controls

Nyingchi Districts Map: The Names You Will See on an Itinerary

The administrative table becomes useful only when it explains a travel day. These are the names most likely to appear between Lhasa, the airport and eastern Tibet.

Bayi: the name behind most Nyingchi hotel stays

If an itinerary says “overnight in Nyingchi,” the hotel is usually in or around Bayi's urban area. This is the most convenient base for a first arrival because accommodation, restaurants and transport services are concentrated here.

Bayi is also the decision point for the next direction. West leads back toward Basum Tso and Lhasa. East leads through Lulang toward Bomi. South leads toward Mainling and the Grand Canyon corridor.

Mainling: where the plane lands

Nyingchi Mainling Airport is in Mainling City, not beside central Bayi. The dedicated airport road is about 45 km, and the airport is roughly 50 km from Bayi's main urban area. Under normal conditions, a private transfer usually needs about one hour, but flight timing and road conditions can extend the journey.

This changes the first day. A late arrival may be best followed by a direct transfer to Bayi and an easy evening. A Grand Canyon itinerary may instead use the Mainling side of the region without first treating Bayi as a sightseeing stop.

Gongbo'gyamda: the western approach from Lhasa

Gongbo'gyamda appears because the Lhasa–Nyingchi road crosses the county and Basum Tso lies within it. On a classic overland itinerary, the lake can become the scenic break between Lhasa and Bayi.

The county name is less important than the route consequence: a Basum Tso visit takes travelers away from a simple point-to-point transfer. The overnight may be near the lake or in Bayi, depending on the day's timing.

Bomi: still in Nyingchi, but no longer a city transfer

Bomi is about 230 km from central Nyingchi. Normal driving takes roughly 4–5 hours, before longer stops in Lulang or along the mountain road. It works as a separate overnight base on a G318 journey toward Ranwu and eastern Tibet.

Expect winding mountain roads rather than a fast highway. The distance may look modest on a map, but the climb over Sejila Pass, bends, weather and roadside stops make it a demanding half-day journey.

Calling Bomi “part of Nyingchi” is administratively correct but practically misleading. It is not an outer neighborhood of Bayi, and it should not be squeezed into a short afternoon transfer.

Nang, Medog and Zayü: routes that need their own reason

Nang follows a different Yarlung Tsangpo corridor and is relevant to selected southern routes. Medog is normally approached from Bomi. Zayü lies farther southeast and relates to remote overland or border-area itineraries.

As of April 2026, the new G219 section between Medog and Zayü was not open to general traffic. Medog access continued via G559 with temporary directional controls. Road status and border-area permissions can change, so these routes must be checked against the approved itinerary shortly before departure. Road status last checked: 17 October 2026.

Arriving in Nyingchi: Match the Transport Name to the Right Base

Nyingchi's airport, railway station and main hotels do not all share one compact transport zone. The table below shows what the arrival name means after the ticket is booked.

Arrival point Where it is Usual next base Practical meaning
Nyingchi Mainling Airport Mainling City Bayi or the Grand Canyon side Allow about one hour to Bayi under normal conditions
Nyingchi Railway Station Bayi District Bayi urban area The simplest arrival for a city-based overnight
G318 from Lhasa Via Gongbo'gyamda Basum Tso or Bayi The lake detour and sightseeing stops shape the day's timing
G318 from Bomi Eastern Nyingchi region Bayi Treat as a 4–5 hour road stage before substantial stops

The airport's name creates the most common misunderstanding. Landing at “Nyingchi” does not mean the hotel is five minutes away. The railway station, by contrast, is on the Bayi side and fits a city overnight more naturally.

Reading a Nyingchi Prefecture Map through Real Routes

A Nyingchi prefecture map becomes easier to understand when each administrative name is attached to an actual journey rather than memorized as a list.

Lhasa–Basum Tso–Bayi

This west-to-east route enters Nyingchi through Gongbo'gyamda. Basum Tso provides the main scenic stop before Bayi, so the county becomes relevant even when the traveler never visits its administrative center.

Mainling Airport–Bayi or the Grand Canyon

From the airport, one route turns toward Bayi for the main city stay. Another continues through Mainling toward Pai and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon area. These are different first-day shapes, even though both may be sold under the general name “Nyingchi.”

Bayi–Lulang–Bomi–Ranwu

This is the natural eastbound sequence. Lulang remains within Bayi District, Bomi becomes the next major overnight base, and Ranwu lies beyond Nyingchi in Baxoi County, Chamdo. The administrative boundary is less important than preserving a realistic driving rhythm.

Medog or Zayü extensions

Neither is a quick add-on to a Bayi stay. A Medog journey requires the Bomi approach and current road-control checks. A Zayü route turns toward a remote southeastern corridor and may involve additional border-area arrangements.

For international visitors, these places must form part of an organized and approved Tibet itinerary. The tour operator arranges the required Tibet travel documents and confirms whether additional permits apply; an administrative map alone does not establish that a route is open or authorized.

What This Nyingchi Counties Map Can Help You Decide

Use the map to check three things before accepting an itinerary:

• Where you actually sleep. “Nyingchi” normally means Bayi, but the hotel address should confirm it.

• Whether an arrival is a transfer or a sightseeing day. Mainling Airport to Bayi is a real road transfer; Bayi to Bomi is a separate travel stage.

• Whether a county belongs to the standard route. Gongbo'gyamda and Bomi connect naturally with common journeys. Medog, Zayü and Nang need a specific route purpose.

For detailed attractions, hotels and road combinations, use the main Nyingchi Map. For sightseeing clusters, use the Nyingchi Tourist Map. This page is the reference for administrative names, gateways and the towns behind an itinerary. The Chamdo Map picks up the same corridor east of Ranwu.

Conclusion

The most useful way to read Nyingchi is simple: stay in Bayi, land in Mainling, and use Bomi for the eastbound road. The wider region is too large to treat as one city, so every itinerary should name the actual overnight town and transfer. For the full national picture, see the Tibet Map hub, Tibet Regions Map, Tibet City Map.

For the broader route view, use the Nyingchi Map, the Tibet Tourist Map and the Tibet Altitude Map. The Chamdo Map continues the eastern corridor beyond Ranwu, the Lhasa City Map covers the western approach, and the Tibet Permit Map explains the permit conditions for Medog and Zayü.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nyingchi a city or a larger administrative region?

It is both. Nyingchi is a prefecture-level city covering one district, one county-level city and five counties. In everyday travel language, “Nyingchi city” usually means the urban area in Bayi District.

How far is Nyingchi Mainling Airport from downtown Nyingchi?

The airport is roughly 50 km from Bayi's urban center. The dedicated airport road is about 45 km, and a private transfer normally takes around one hour in ordinary conditions. The exact time depends on the hotel location, traffic and weather.

How long does it take to drive from Nyingchi city to Bomi?

Allow roughly 4–5 hours for the approximately 230 km journey from Bayi to Bomi in normal conditions. Lulang, weather, road works and sightseeing stops can make the total travel day longer.

Does a Nyingchi city map cover Lulang?

Yes. Lulang lies within Bayi District, so it appears on the administrative map, but it is a separate road stop about 70 km east of Bayi rather than part of the urban area. Travelers heading to Bomi normally pass through it on the same day.
