12 Days Chengdu to Tibet Train Tour: Panda, Leshan, Lhasa, EBC

Arrive at Chengdu airport, where you will be met and transferred to the hotel. No sightseeing is scheduled after check-in, leaving the rest of the day free to rest before the tour begins properly tomorrow.

Leave the hotel around 7:30-8:00 am for the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Reaching the base around feeding time gives the best chance to see both adult pandas and younger animals when they are more active.

The visit also includes the Panda Museum, where displays and a short film explain panda development, behavior and conservation in more detail than the outdoor enclosures alone.

After lunch in the city, continue to Jinsha Site Museum. The archaeological remains and excavated objects open a window onto the ancient Shu civilization that developed in the Chengdu region thousands of years ago.

Later, walk through Jinli Ancient Street, where traditional-style lanes, small shops and local snacks make for an easy finish to the sightseeing day. A Sichuan Opera performance with face-changing and fire-spitting can be arranged in the evening at additional cost.

Leave Chengdu around 8:00 am and drive approximately two hours to Leshan. The main visit is Leshan Grand Buddha, the 71-meter stone-carved seated Buddha cut directly into the cliff beside Lingyun Temple during the Tang Dynasty.

The scale is easiest to understand once you see how the figure sits against the river and surrounding cliff. An optional boat trip offers another angle from the water and can be added at extra cost.

Return to Chengdu in the afternoon and keep some free time before transferring to the railway station. In the evening, board the Tibet-bound train. The reference service listed by the supplier is Train Z322, departing at 20:46 and arriving in Lhasa two days later at 07:24.

Spend the full day aboard the train as it continues west and gradually climbs toward the Tibetan Plateau. There are no scheduled sightseeing stops today; the changing landscape outside the window is the experience.

As the route rises, city scenery gives way to broader grassland, mountain country and long stretches with very little settlement. Use the slower day to rest before reaching Lhasa tomorrow morning.

The final railway section crosses some of the plateau's most open scenery, including the Kekexili Nature Reserve and grasslands used by nomadic herders. Depending on daylight and the train schedule, wildlife may also be visible at a distance.

Arrive in Lhasa in the morning. Your local guide meets the group at the railway station and transfers you to the hotel, where the rest of the day is left free for acclimatization.

Keep the first sightseeing day in Lhasa focused on the old political and spiritual center. Visit Potala Palace, where former living quarters, chapels, murals, scriptures and memorial stupas fill the enormous hilltop complex.

Continue to Jokhang Temple, the most revered pilgrimage temple in Tibet. Outside, Barkhor Street follows the traditional clockwise kora around the temple, with pilgrims, prayer wheels and shops sharing the same compact lanes.

Authentic Tibetan Cultural Experiences:

Take a break in a local teahouse for Tibetan sweet tea. The busy shared tables and everyday atmosphere offer a quieter contrast to the major monuments.

A Tibetan dress photoshoot is also arranged around the old quarter. Traditional clothing, hair styling and makeup are prepared before the photographer works with you around selected streets and Tibetan-style backdrops.

In the evening, sit down with the group for a Tibetan welcome dinner and try local dishes together after the day's sightseeing.

Begin at Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in Tibet and formerly a major center of government and Gelug Buddhist learning. Its halls and monastic colleges spread across the hillside above western Lhasa.

Continue to Norbulingka, the traditional summer palace of successive Dalai Lamas. The gardens and residential buildings give a more domestic view of Tibetan political history than the monumental Potala Palace.

The final stop is Sera Monastery. When the debate courtyard is active, monks challenge one another through rapid questions, clapping and emphatic gestures as part of their philosophical training.

Leave Lhasa and climb to Kampala Pass at 4,794 meters for the first broad view of Yamdrok Lake. Its turquoise water winds between dry ridges, with Mount Nyenchen Khangsar rising in the distance when the weather is clear.

At Karo La Pass, look toward the Nyenchen Khangsar glacier before continuing along the Friendship Highway toward Gyantse.

In Gyantse, visit the Gyantse Kumbum, a multi-tiered stupa filled with chapels and murals. Continue to Shigatse in the late afternoon and stay overnight there.

Leave Shigatse early and travel through Lhatse and Shegar toward the Everest region. The road crosses Gyatso La at about 5,248 meters, then reaches Gawula Pass at about 5,198 meters.

When the air is clear, Gawula opens one of the great Himalayan panoramas: Makalu, Lhotse, Mount Everest, Cho Oyu and Shishapangma can line the horizon at the same time.

Continue down through the dry Tashi Zom valley and pass Rongbuk Monastery, one of the world's highest monasteries and a classic foreground for views of Everest, before reaching the Everest Base Camp area.

Evening Dining: Tibetan Yak Hotpot

Dinner is a Tibetan Yak Hotpot, with hot broth, yak meat and vegetables shared by the group after the long drive across the high passes.

Accommodation Options

EBC Tent Guesthouse: The simplest option and the closest to the Everest viewing area. Rooms are basic, there is no private shower and toilets are shared, but the location gives you a chance to see sunrise when the weather is clear.

Vienna International Hotel: A more comfortable stay with private bathroom facilities and better room standards. The trade-off is distance; guests staying here do not return to Everest Base Camp for sunrise the following morning.

Upgrading to Rongbuk Hotel: The best balance of comfort and location for travelers who want to stay close to Mount Everest. A supplement applies, with the exact rate depending on season and room availability.

Guests staying at the EBC Tent Guesthouse or the upgraded Rongbuk Hotel can rise early for a possible sunrise over Mount Everest. When the sky is clear, the upper slopes catch the first light before the valley below.

Guests staying at the Vienna International Hotel will not return to Everest Base Camp for sunrise because of the hotel's location.

By late morning or early afternoon, begin the drive back through Shegar and continue east to Shigatse for the night.

Spend the morning at Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Pilgrims move through its courtyards and halls around the large Maitreya image and the memorial stupas of previous Panchen Lamas.

In the afternoon, return to Lhasa along the northern Friendship Highway. The road follows the Brahmaputra River through broad valleys and rural scenery for much of the journey.
