10 Days Tibet Peach Blossom Tour: Nyingchi, Lhasa, Yamdrok

Arrive in Chengdu and check in at the airport hotel. There is no sightseeing planned today, so the day stays simple before tomorrow morning’s flight into eastern Tibet.

Use the evening to rest and keep your passport, Tibet Travel Permit and flight details together in your hand luggage. The route moves quickly once you reach Nyingchi, and having everything ready makes the early departure much easier.

Fly from Chengdu to Nyingchi in the morning, arriving at Mainling Airport before midday. Compared with entering Tibet through Lhasa, Nyingchi gives the trip a lower and greener starting point, which suits a spring route well.

The first blossom stop is along the Mainling Peach Blossom Avenue, where old peach trees appear beside fields, village lanes and the broad river valley. The trees are not planted in tidy rows, and that is part of the appeal: the flowers sit naturally inside the working landscape.

Continue to Gala Peach Blossom Village, one of the best-known spring viewing areas near Nyingchi. During peak bloom, pink branches spread across the slopes above the Niyang River, with farms and snowy ridges adding depth behind them.

In the evening, the group shares a Nyingchi Stone Pot Dinner, a regional specialty served hot after the first full day of travel.

Peach blossom timing changes slightly each year with temperature and elevation. The route is scheduled for the spring season, but the exact stage of bloom at each village cannot be guaranteed.

Leave Nyingchi and follow the G318 east. The road passes the Tongmai Natural Barrier, a section once known for difficult mountain travel but now crossed on a much improved modern route.

The first long stop is Guxiang Lake. Wetland, forest and small settlements sit close to the water, and on calm mornings the lake can hold surprisingly clear reflections of the surrounding hills.

Later, continue into Bomi Peach Blossom Valley. The blossom scenery here feels larger than around Nyingchi city. Old peach trees spread across farmland and villages for kilometers, with river valleys and high ridges opening behind them rather than a single concentrated garden.

Stay overnight in Bomi, right in the middle of the eastern Tibet section of the journey.

Today the route steps away from peach blossoms for a while and heads farther east toward glacier country.

At Midui Glacier, take the scenic-area vehicle and continue toward the main viewing section. The setting is unusual because forest and village land remain visible below the glacier, so the ice does not feel isolated from the surrounding valley.

Continue to Ranwu Lake, where the road follows sections of the shoreline beneath snow-covered mountains. The lake changes character from one bend to the next: open water in one direction, village scenery in another, and long mountain reflections when the wind stays light.

Return to Bomi for the night after a full day on the road.

There is walking around the glacier viewing area. Wear shoes with a good grip, especially if spring snow or meltwater has left the path wet.

Start with Galang Lake, a smaller lake northwest of Bomi where the shoreline sits close to traditional villages and wooded hills. After the broader scale of Ranwu, this stop feels more enclosed and local.

The drive then turns west toward Lulang Forest. Spruce-covered slopes, pasture and streams fill the valley, while snow peaks rise beyond the forest when the weather is clear. Spring here is not only about flowers; the green forest and lingering mountain snow are just as much part of the scene.

Continue to Lulang International Tourism Town and stay overnight in Lulang rather than pushing on toward Lhasa.

The group leaves Lulang and begins the long westbound journey toward Lhasa, but eastern Tibet still has two very different stops before the landscape changes.

At Basum Tso, forest comes down close to the water and the lake sits inside a ring of mountains. Spring can bring peach blossoms to the surrounding villages while the higher slopes remain snow-covered, giving the area a softer look than the open plateau lakes around Lhasa.

Continue to Laru Village Wild Peach Blossom Forest, where flowering trees grow around Tibetan homes and fields at a higher elevation than the earlier stops in Bomi. Bloom timing can therefore feel slightly different even within the same departure.

The final drive follows the Lhasa-Nyingchi Expressway west. Forest gradually thins, the valleys broaden and by evening the group is in Lhasa.

Lhasa is noticeably higher than Nyingchi and Bomi. Keep the first evening in the city relaxed, even if you have already felt comfortable at the lower elevations.

After several days of spring landscapes, today is about the city itself. Start at the Potala Palace and take the climb steadily. Inside, your guide connects the chapels, former living quarters, murals and memorial stupas with the history of the Dalai Lamas and Tibet’s former political center.

Later, continue to Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims move through the main halls and around the traditional kora throughout the day. Outside, that circuit spills directly into Barkhor Street, where prayer wheels, shops and old courtyard buildings all share the same narrow lanes.

Stop at the Yaowang Hill Viewpoint for a different perspective on the Potala and the city around it.

Authentic Tibetan Cultural Experiences:

Step into a local teahouse for Tibetan sweet tea. It is an easy way to break up the sightseeing and spend a little time in a place Lhasa residents actually use rather than another formal attraction.

A Tibetan dress photoshoot is also arranged in the old quarter. Traditional clothing, hair styling and makeup are prepared before the photographer works with the group around selected streets and Tibetan-style backdrops.

In the evening, sit down with the group for a Tibetan welcome dinner. After nearly a week traveling together through eastern Tibet, it feels less like an introduction and more like a chance to slow down and share the day over local food.

Leave Lhasa and climb toward the high viewpoint above Yamdrok Lake. The lake reveals itself gradually from the road, with long turquoise arms cutting between dry brown ridges and snow peaks farther away.

After the high viewpoint, continue closer to the shoreline. The lower road gives a different sense of scale, with small villages, grazing animals and the lake stretching far beyond a single frame.

The route also includes Yuthok Monastery, a small monastery set apart from the larger religious complexes visited in Lhasa. Its isolated setting beside the lake gives the day a quieter ending before the drive back to the city.

Wind can be strong around Yamdrok Lake even in spring. Keep a warm outer layer in the vehicle and avoid rushing at the higher viewpoints.

Transfer to Lhasa Railway Station and board the Qinghai-Tibet Railway for the overnight journey to Xining. A soft-sleeper berth is arranged for the group.

Once the train leaves Lhasa, the pace becomes completely different from the road days. Much of the journey crosses broad sections of the plateau, with grassland, lakes and snow ranges passing outside the window for hours.

Depending on the departure time and daylight, the route may include views across the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, one of the most remote sections of the railway.

Keep a small overnight bag with toiletries, snacks and anything you need on the train. Your larger luggage may be less convenient to access once the compartment is settled.
