Ngari Tourist Map: Top Attractions and Travel Routes

Ngari tourist map for Kailash, Manasarovar, Guge and Zanda. Compare route groups, driving days and bases, with a separate look at Pangong Tso access.

For a first visit, use this Ngari tourist map to start with Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, then add Zanda and Guge if you have time to travel farther west. Allow dedicated days for the Kailash kora. Pangong Tso lies on a separate northern extension beyond Shiquanhe, and its Tibetan-side access must be confirmed before it becomes part of an international visitor’s itinerary.

Choose between seeing Kailash and walking around it before dividing the remaining days between the lake and Guge.

Start with Kailash: a viewpoint visit or the kora?

The Darchen map centers on the town at Kailash’s southern foot, where travellers prepare for their mountain visit. A stay without the full kora can include agreed viewpoints and permitted local stops, although weather may hide the mountain.

The walking stages on the Mount Kailash map commonly take three days, with nights away from Darchen. Dolma La is the demanding crossing, with a substantial descent afterward. Allow separate preparation time and an appropriate altitude plan.

The Lake Manasarovar map places the lake southeast of Darchen, with Chiu on its northwestern shore. A visit to the northwestern shore around Chiu combines naturally with the mountain area, but a shore stop and a circuit of the lake take different amounts of time. Identify the shore in the proposal before comparing driving distances.

For a short first visit, choose the mountain-and-lake area without trying to add every part of Ngari. If completing the kora is the priority, protect its walking days before allocating any western extension.

Ngari attractions map: follow the destinations from Darchen

On a Tibet map, Darchen anchors this southern travel area: Manasarovar lies southeast and Purang farther south. Zanda is west of the Kailash area. Shiquanhe lies northwest, with the Rutog and Pangong direction farther north beyond it.

Darchen works for the mountain and lake; Zanda for Guge and the earth formations. Shiquanhe becomes useful when the journey continues north or uses transport connections there.

Purang fits an agreed southern arrival or onward journey. Using it for daily activities beginning at Darchen adds repeated drives.

When choosing the best places in Ngari, consider the activity as well as the distance. Kailash can involve days walking, Manasarovar a specific shore visit, and Guge a concentrated ruins visit. The earth forest spreads much farther around Zanda.

Only two or three days? Choose one part of Ngari

A mountain-and-lake visit without the full circuit

Two local days can provide a focused visit around Darchen and Manasarovar when you have already arrived with an appropriate ascent plan. Keep one day for the agreed lake area and transfer, and another for permitted Kailash-area visits. This leaves more room for the weather and your pace than attempting a long western drive as well.

These are destination days. The long arrival from Saga and the return or onward journey need additional time.

Three days with the kora as the priority

A three-day kora uses the entire walking block. It does not also provide a leisurely arrival, a full lake circuit and a trip to Guge. Darchen preparation and the next road stage belong outside that block.

Agree the final-day pickup and overnight beforehand, leaving margin if the walking takes longer or you need more rest.

A short visit centered on Zanda

If Guge and the earth formations are your main interest, center the short visit on Zanda and account separately for reaching it.

Check that your Ngari itinerary map includes the arrival and departure stages; these can be the longest drives.

Guge and Zanda Earth Forest: give the western extension its own time

Access update: Official September 2026 reopening notice

From Darchen, the road to Zanda is a substantial transfer into the Sutlej basin. Published itineraries commonly allocate about five to six hours, over routes described as roughly 250–290 km. The chosen road and stops account for part of that variation.

Stay in Zanda rather than planning to return to Darchen after the visit. An arrival day followed by a full local day gives Guge and the surrounding landscape room before another departure stage.

The Guge ruins at Tsaparang are around 18–19 km from Zanda town in official descriptions. That makes the ruins a practical local visit from the town. The ascent through the site and access to individual buildings still need time beyond the short drive.Zanda government site-distance description

Some earth-forest views appear along the approach road; other photographed formations need a side road or specific viewpoint. Show the operator any photograph central to your plans.

Guge and Zanda’s earth formations can share a full sightseeing day when the selected stops are reasonably close and access allows it. More distant formations need extra time. An official September 2026 notice reported the reopening of Guge and the Piyang–Dongga sites, but availability on a later date still requires confirmation.Official September 2026 reopening notice

Ngari travel route map: arrive from Saga, continue toward Zanda or Shiquanhe

Coming west from Saga, the southern route reaches the Manasarovar and Kailash area before the western extensions. Saga is in Shigatse and is an approach stop, rather than an Ngari sightseeing base. A lake visit before Darchen can fit this direction without first driving past the area and returning.

After the mountain stay, continue toward Zanda if Guge is included. A later transfer to Shiquanhe can suit an onward northern journey or the relevant airport connection. If you are returning east toward Saga, the Zanda extension adds driving in both directions and should be given enough time to justify it.

Purang belongs in this sequence when the agreed route arrives from or departs toward the south, or when the town itself is part of the visit. It does not have to be inserted between every lake and mountain stage. Border approaches depend on current arrangements and cannot be assumed from the road shown on a map.

On a fixed-departure tour, Guge may be included, omitted or placed before the kora. Choose the program by its named stops and walking days, with any changes agreed before booking. A geographically sensible branch still needs the group’s time and permissions.

Pangong Tso from Shiquanhe: a separate northern extension

Pangong Tso’s eastern end lies in the Rutog area northwest of Shiquanhe. It belongs on an Ngari sightseeing map, but it is well beyond the southern mountain-and-lake group. Travelling there starts another road stage rather than adding a nearby shore stop at Manasarovar.

Published geographical descriptions place the eastern lake area roughly 135–140 km from Shiquanhe. That is an orientation reference, not a confirmed visitor route. International access to the Tibetan side has restrictions, and available operator information does not establish a dependable permission pathway for this article.

Keep it outside the bookable plan until the licensed operating agency confirms the exact permitted destination for your passport and dates. Ladakh-side tours and permits concern a different approach and cannot be used to establish access from Tibet.

Without confirmed northern access, keep the journey focused on the mountain, Manasarovar and Zanda.

Driving time and overnight map: match the base to the next visit

These are planning ranges for ordinary conditions, excluding visits, meals and delays. The named lake shore matters; none of the local transfer figures represents a full Manasarovar circuit.

Attractions or route group Direction Normal transport allowance Suitable time Overnight base
Darchen and Manasarovar’s Chiu-side area Southeast from Darchen About 1–1.5 hours one way; roughly 35–45 km depending on the stop 1 visiting/transfer day within a longer local stay Darchen or agreed lake-area base
Kailash outer kora Circuit from the Darchen area Road pickup/drop-off separately arranged; the main circuit is on foot Commonly 3 walking days, plus preparation Darchen before/after; agreed walking-route accommodation
Purang–Manasarovar–Darchen North from Purang Allow roughly half a day for the connecting drive and local transfer logistics Longer if visiting the lake Darchen or a named southern base
Darchen–Zanda West About 5–6 hours driving 1 transfer day, then a separate local sightseeing day Zanda
Zanda–Guge and selected earth-forest stops Local roads around the basin Roughly 30–45 minutes each way to Guge; viewpoints add driving 1 full local day for a focused combination Zanda
Shiquanhe–Pangong direction Northwest via Rutog No visitor transfer commitment until access is confirmed A separate extension, if authorized To be agreed only after route confirmation

Town-to-town distances leave out the climbs into Zanda and time on foot at Guge or Kailash. Include those activities in the daily allowance.

The distances between bases on the Ngari map make a change of hotel worthwhile when it shortens the next stage. Staying several nights around the mountain and then moving to Zanda avoids repeated long excursions from Darchen.

Last checked: 25 October 2026. Published geography, itinerary distances and the Guge reopening notice were reviewed. Current site access, kora conditions, border approaches and accommodation arrangements require travel-date confirmation. International visitors need an arranged Tibet journey and the permissions confirmed by the licensed operating agency. Pangong Tso is not presented here as a confirmed available extension.

Conclusion

Decide whether Kailash means a mountain visit or the full kora, then give Manasarovar and the westward journey enough time. Zanda and Guge reward a separate stay; the northern lake direction needs its own access decision. The most useful route is the one that leaves room for the experience you came for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ngari tourist map FAQs

Can I leave luggage in Darchen during the kora?

Ask the operating agency to confirm storage with the accommodation before the walk. Keep documents, medication and the clothing needed for the circuit with you. The arrangement is simplest when your program returns to the same base, but storage is not automatic.

Can I shorten the kora to make time for Guge?

Do not plan to compress a demanding high-altitude walk simply to add another destination. Discuss the walking stages and your experience with the agency. If the available days are insufficient, a visit without the full circuit or a longer trip is the more realistic choice.

Does a Kailash group tour include Guge Kingdom?

Only when Guge and Zanda are named in the program. Some tours focus on Kailash and Manasarovar and return east afterward. Compare the complete itinerary before booking rather than expecting a detour to be added on arrival.

Can we book a flight out of Ngari immediately after the kora?

The walk finishes near Darchen, while the relevant airport may require a separate road transfer. Leave enough time for that journey and possible walking delays. Confirm the airport, pickup and flight connection with the operating agency before buying the ticket.
