For a first short visit, use this Nyingchi tourist map to combine Basum Tso with your arrival from Lhasa, then choose between the Lulang direction and a full day around the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Continuing east to Bomi and Ranwu needs additional road time and usually a change of base. Medog is a separate access decision, outside the short routes suggested here.
You can spend a good day at a lake and still have no time for the next valley. The useful choice is how far to travel before turning back. Your arrival point and final departure often settle that more clearly than a list of must-see places.
Nyingchi attractions map: three journeys from Bayi
On a Tibet map, Bayi is the urban reference for central Nyingchi. Basum Tso lies northwest, off the road toward Lhasa. Lulang and Bomi lie east along G318. The Grand Canyon visitor approaches head south toward the Yarlung Tsangpo and Pai area.
For a Nyingchi sightseeing map, those directions are more useful than grouping everything by how close it looks to the city label. Most of the named highlights require road travel beyond Bayi. A city-center hotel gives you a convenient start, but does not put every valley within a short excursion.
The Nyingchi map makes Bayi a practical base for selected return excursions, while the eastern road leads onward to Lulang and Bomi. Once the journey continues to Bomi, staying farther east saves the long evening drive back. Lulang can also provide an overnight between stages, especially when time in the forest landscape matters more than reaching another town.

Arriving from Lhasa? Consider Basum Tso before Bayi
Basum Tso sits on a side road from Bahe on the Lhasa approach; its position on the Tibet lakes map should not be mistaken for a stop directly beside the main road. If the lake is a priority, visiting before continuing to Bayi can avoid going back in the same direction on another day. It is still a detour, with a substantial visit after leaving the main road.
Treat Lhasa–Basum Tso–Bayi as a full travel day. A direct Lhasa–Bayi transfer is commonly planned at around five to six hours; adding the lake means additional driving, entry arrangements and time on foot. An early departure and a realistic stopping plan matter more than adding another roadside visit.
An airport arrival gives a different starting point. Mainling Airport lies south of Bayi, so Basum Tso is not automatically on the way to your hotel. From Bayi, published descriptions put the lake around 120 km away, with roughly two to two-and-a-half hours driving each way.
For that return excursion, reserve the day for the lake. Allow time for the agreed visitor area instead of trying to fit Lulang into the afternoon. When choosing the best places in Nyingchi, one complete lake visit is more satisfying than spending the day crossing between distant entrances.
Lulang, Bomi and Ranwu: decide how far east to go
Lulang as a return excursion or overnight
The road from Bayi climbs toward the Sejila mountain area before reaching Lulang. Forest, changing elevation and mountain viewpoints occupy the journey; it is not a fast flat connection despite the relatively modest distance.
Allow a full day if returning to Bayi. The outward drive is roughly two hours as a planning reference, with more time needed for the pass and selected stops. A mountain view depends on the weather, so do not make a clear sighting the condition for the day to feel worthwhile.
Staying in Lulang gives more time after the through-traffic has moved on, and makes the next eastbound stage shorter. Choose it when that slower stay is part of the experience you want. It adds less value if you will arrive late and depart before having time in the area.
Bomi needs room beyond the transfer
From Bayi, Bomi is around 230–240 km along G318, commonly a four-to-five-hour drive before extended stops. A return from Bayi in the same day leaves little time at the destination.
Use Bomi as the eastern overnight base if you want to explore its valleys or continue to Ranwu. The places visited around town should be named in the proposal: a peach-blossom valley, forest walk and main-road viewpoint require different time allowances.
For a two-day eastbound journey from Bayi, one night in Bomi allows a visit around the town and a return the following day. It does not also provide a leisurely Ranwu excursion unless more time is added or the trip continues east.
Ranwu extends the eastern journey
The Chamdo map places Ranwu Lake in Baxoi County, roughly another 130 km east of Bomi. A two-and-a-half-to-three-and-a-half-hour drive each way makes it a full excursion day from Bomi once the lake visit is included.
If returning to Bayi afterward, leave another stage for that westbound transfer. Continuing to Sichuan or elsewhere in Chamdo changes the calculation, since the route may not require the same return. State the finish point before deciding whether Ranwu fits.
Give the Grand Canyon its own day
The Grand Canyon visit uses the Pai-area approaches south of Bayi. Reaching the visitor center is the start of the local visit, with further travel to the stops included in the booked program.
The official scenic-area notice identifies separate approved sightseeing-vehicle lines: the southern-bank visitor-center–Zhibai route and the northern-bank visitor-center–Sosong–Dalin route. Ask which bank and stops your program includes. A general canyon label does not establish access to every photographed viewpoint.Official Grand Canyon operating-boundary notice
Reserve a full day for an excursion from Bayi. The road approach takes roughly two to three hours each way depending on the entrance and route, followed by the site’s transport and sightseeing. A canyon-area overnight can give more time there, but requires the exact accommodation location and visitor arrangements to be agreed.
Namcha Barwa may be visible from suitable locations when clouds allow. Leaving time around the chosen viewing area gives you an opportunity, not a guarantee. The river and valley remain part of the visit when the summit is hidden.
Medog lies farther into the lower-river region. A Grand Canyon ticket does not authorize travel through the entire canyon or onward to Medog. Operator references report restrictions on international visits to Medog, and no reliable confirmation was found for including it in the routes here. Its location belongs on the regional map; a proposed visit requires specific agency confirmation before booking.
A two- or three-day Nyingchi itinerary map
A short stay based in Bayi
With two full days after arrival, choose two directions: Basum Tso plus Lulang, or Basum Tso plus the Grand Canyon. If the lake was already visited during the transfer from Lhasa, those two destination days can instead cover Lulang and the canyon.
A third full day gives more time for a selected route or allows all three directions, assuming each remains a separate day. This is a central Nyingchi stay, without attempting to reach Bomi and Ranwu as well.
A stay that moves east
For three days starting and finishing in Bayi, consider a first stage through Lulang to Bomi, a local Bomi day and a return stage. This leaves room to visit rather than only reach the eastern town. Substitute the local day with Ranwu only if you accept another full road excursion and keep the return day available.
If those three days also include travel from Lhasa, the available destination time is smaller. An airport departure similarly needs a transfer and check-in allowance. A Nyingchi itinerary map should include these boundary days so the sightseeing plan matches the time you actually have.
The broader Tibet travel route map shows the onward connections, but a fixed-departure group may use a different sequence or overnight base. Compare the published overnight stops before booking; moving an excursion to another day can affect the whole group’s transport and tickets.
Nyingchi travel route map: driving days and overnight stops
These are indicative driving allowances for ordinary conditions. They exclude meals, attraction visits, scenic-area shuttles and delays; mountain viewpoints and seasonal blossom detours add time.
| Attractions or route | Direction | Normal car time | Suitable time | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basum Tso from Bayi | Northwest | About 2–2.5 hours each way | 1 full excursion day | Bayi or agreed lake-area stay |
| Lulang from Bayi | East across the Sejila area | Around 2 hours each way before stops | 1 full return day or an overnight stage | Bayi or Lulang |
| Bayi–Lulang–Bomi | East along G318 | About 4–5 hours overall before extended visits | 1 transfer day; add local time in Bomi | Bomi |
| Ranwu Lake from Bomi | Farther east | About 2.5–3.5 hours each way | 1 full day from Bomi; extra time to return to Bayi | Bomi or an agreed Ranwu base |
| Grand Canyon from Bayi | South toward Pai | Around 2–3 hours each way, entrance-dependent | 1 full day; longer with a valley stay | Bayi or a named canyon-area base |
| Medog direction | Separate mountain approach | Not supplied as a visitor transfer | No recommended itinerary without confirmed access | To be determined only after authorization |
For the canyon, a shorter drive to one entrance does not mean the whole visit is shorter; the included bank, shuttle and stops matter. For Bomi and Ranwu, the principal issue is how far east you will travel before returning west.
Rain, road works and temporary controls can alter the longer stages. A confirmed scenic road on a regional map still needs a departure-day update. International visitors require an arranged Tibet journey with permissions and site access confirmed through the licensed operating agency.

Confirm the selected bank, local transport, road conditions and group itinerary for your dates. Medog remains outside the suggested routes unless a specific permitted visit is confirmed.
Conclusion
The lake, eastern forest valleys and Grand Canyon each deserve their own time. Use the arrival route to place Basum Tso efficiently, stay farther east when Bomi is a priority, and count the return before adding Ranwu. A shorter route can leave more of the day for the places you came to see.

Frequently Asked Questions
Nyingchi tourist map FAQs
Can I fly out of Nyingchi after visiting Ranwu?
Yes, if the itinerary leaves enough time to return west and reach the airport. Ranwu is several road stages from the airport area; do not treat a departure flight as an easy addition to a full lake sightseeing day. Agree the preceding night’s base before buying tickets.
Does a Grand Canyon ticket include every viewpoint?
No. The booked entrance, bank, transport and included stops define the visit. Extra experiences may use separate arrangements, and undeveloped areas remain outside the approved sightseeing routes. Check the precise inclusions with the agency.
Can a group tour change its route for peach blossoms?
Only when the operator agrees that the adjustment fits the group’s schedule and arrangements. Flowering varies by elevation and weather, so a fixed date cannot guarantee peak bloom in every valley. Share a particular blossom interest before booking.
Is Nyingchi low enough to ignore altitude?
No. Bayi is around 3,000 m, and trips through mountain passes go higher. The relatively lower valleys do not remove altitude risk. Discuss your ascent plan before travel and tell your guide if symptoms develop rather than continuing higher while unwell.
