Beijing to Tibet
Choose Beijing when the Forbidden City, Great Wall and China’s imperial history are priorities. Direct connections can make it a practical first stop, but the overland rail journey is long; compare it with flying when the whole trip is under two weeks.
Shanghai to Tibet
Shanghai is convenient for many international arrivals and works well with an eastern-China city stay. The distance to Lhasa is substantial, so compare the total door-to-door time and ticket availability before choosing rail over air.
Chengdu to Tibet
Chengdu is one of the most practical gateways for combining Sichuan and Tibet, with useful flight connections and the option to add pandas, local food and nearby heritage sites. Confirm the permit delivery and transport timing before fixing the onward ticket.
Xining to Tibet
Xining is the principal starting point for the Qinghai–Tibet Railway and offers a shorter rail journey than eastern Chinese cities. The train crosses high terrain, but it does not replace a gentle first two days after arrival in Lhasa.
Xi'an to Tibet
Choose Xi’an when the Terracotta Warriors and Silk Road history belong in the same journey. Both flight and rail connections are possible; compare actual schedules and ticket availability against the days you want to reserve for Tibet.
Guangzhou to Tibet
